shooting a squirrel with a bow
OK a few time when i have been hunting i have had squirrels come up 10 yards out and hang out
i thought about trying to shoot one with my bow to see if could has anyone done this is it likely your hit one |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
While deer hunting? I've never really thought about it (seems I'd risk giving away my position), but I "think" it's against the law to have anything but BH's in my quiver, here....and I sure as HECK am not going to waste a BH on a tree rat!:D

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
yep, i have been aggrevated to the level that i can't help but let one fly a time or two and so far have connected twice our of maybe four attempts. they appear to be all over the place and i can't stand the noise, but don't lose an arrow for a squirrel, twice as aggravating!
i have learned one thing about probability in archery, your probability gets much better if you actually shoot at the squirrel......it isn't about how likely......its how good of a shot you are bro!! BSD- big squirrel down! |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I've killed two this year, and last year I was 0-4. So, I do take a crack at them occassionaly!
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I've thought about it 4,519,632,597 times, but never flung an arrow at one. The one the other day that ran back and forth across the tree limb above me was lucky he didnt' get it. He was dumping snow and water on my head and down my neck all day.

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I carry an old arrow with a field tip for just this. Got a groundhog this year! Have gotten a few squirrels in my day. I dont believe you jeopardize your position unless theres actually deer within eye site. I llike what bhunter50 said BSD!!!

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I always carry one field point in my quiver so I can pick out a leaf and shoot it before getting down from my stand... came in handy about mid-week while Matt was here, as I skewered a big red fox squirrel at 22 yards for him to take home to his taxidermist! :)

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I really enjoy bowhunting squirrels. Broadheads of course make the most certain and fastest work of them, but obviously are less than ideal when the squirrel is up a tree.My preference is forJudos, steel blunts, empty cartridge casings, andespecially Ace hex blunts.

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Never have, but wanted too many times, just knew in my mind if I did draw on one, there would be a buck sneaking around and bust me. I did shoot a racoon that was in a limb above me, afraid that critter was going to get in my lap.
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
i might try it next time i am out i wont when there up in a tree
if there ground level at worst i am out some fletchs or a need to sharpen a bh |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Ya all the time!.. Last night I had squirrels within 5 yds of me all night in my blind but its gun season and Im not going to blow a squirrel to pieces. This year during bow season while on the stand I did manage to take one with my bow. I used a broadhead and the way the squirrel was sitting between two limbs the broadhead never hit the tree!! Lucky me
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I have killed 17 of them over the years with the bow. I have not done it over 15 yrs though. BH and field pts. either way you can whack em!!
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
A rabbit was the first animal I ever killed with a bow when I was 14, a week later shot a squirrel in a pine tree with a flu flu arrow and a bird snaro point - used to hunt them quite a bit as a child, would normally get one or two per trip, would use the flu flu arrows and judo points mainly

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I've shot one before. Make sure that they're on the ground and not in a tree (if you want your arrow back).;)

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Paraphrased from something Dean Torges once wrote:
"You mean you didn't shoot at a squirrel because you were afraid of spooking deer? Don't ever do that. The squirrels resent the hell out of it!" |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I carry an old BH and arrow for stuff like this, armadillo mainly round here. i like squirls.
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I did it once. I had a pesky squirrel harrassing me all day. He offered me a 5 yard shot, almost straight down. That slick trick just about tore him in half, but he still managed to go 25 yards before he "crashed". He actually was pinned to the ground, but he somehow managed to jump off the arrow and run away. You'd be amazed at the blood trail a squirrel can make.
I did it but I won't do it again. I didn't eat the squirrel, and I felt guilty. I try to only kill what I intend to eat. Plus I ruined a perfectly good broadhead. |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
What didnt you eat?????? squriil= tasty dinner
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I always carry a field tip with me, have carried one for probably 8yrs or better but have only shot a groundhog. I have wanted to shoot squirrels about 100000000 times but just never bring myself to it.

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
When I was young, squirrel and rabbit is what got me started bow hunting. We use to make blunts out 38 pistol cases glued to our ceder shafts. We would walk and shoot squirrel and rabbit with them with out ofrecurves. Actually, a squirrel is the first animal i ever shot with a bow.

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I shot acouple partridge out of my stand with the judo. Never had a squirrel aggravate me enough. I'm just as happy with a partridge as a deer.
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I am very careful when I allow myself a shot at a squirrel so as to not spook deer but I have taken a few. my average is right around 50% which i think is great. I am 0-1 this year though, I was a half inch high and bounced it off the top of his head[:o]

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
My friend killed an albino ground hog this year.
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
I'm surprised some people have never tried it! I shoot at them all the time.
I have found that they make great range finders!I like to take a shot on one now and again, just to reassure me that my bow is still on and my ranges are in check. WhenI just barely miss one I just smile to myself knowing that if it were a deer I'd still be in the kill zone. |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
i was worried most of you would think i was stupied for thinking about it i am amazed that so many of you have i will if i get a shot nxt time i hunt
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Hell no you aren't stupid for shooting a squirrel with a bow...Talk about a challenge.....Let 'er rip dude.
I've shot a couple, best one was straight up 30 yards......hit him square in the ear. |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Its a perfect way to keep a slow sit interesting, its a great time, and they taste great too.

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
i agree with many of the guys thought about it way too many time while not actually doing it. one of these days im sure i will though
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Shot 5 this season...
|
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
best one was straight up 30 yards |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Many times i've tried, gotten a few squirels. It sucks wasteing a BH on them, gotta resharpen it then, cuts them up pretty bad too with my 3 blade snuffer's, almost too much! I now carrie a hex head with me, doesn't stick into tree's to bad when you miss!;)

RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
My first bowkill was a squirrel too. We were walking in to our deer stands and my B-I-L had one run in front of him and up a fence post about10yards away. He pointed it out, and I loaded up one of my arrow with one of the rubber bludgen tips. Drew back and put a head shot on him, with a load of gear on my back. Those tips put a massive head trauma on them, loads of blood. We left it on a stump to pick up on the way out, but something had taken it, and it was definatly dead, so something ate for free.
I got my second bowkill at his house. He had some rabbits coming in on the edge of a corn field. I used a bludgen tip on his crossbow bolt. With a 30yard shot the tip put a hole in one and meat in the freezer. |
RE: shooting a squirrel with a bow
Back in the 60's and 70's. I would go out a just hunting squirrel before deer season and rabbits after deer season. I went out a lots of times with my old 65 pound recurve bow and woodys with a 9/16 nut screwed on the end and have taken my limit of 6 squirrel in Iowa. We all get together after deer season and go out and drive rabbits. I have see times 4 to 10 of us go out and get 20 to 30 rabbits a day and had a ball.
