Wind direction - screwy this year?
#1
Is it just me, or has the wind been awfully screwy this year? I was talking with Mike (dukemichaels) last night over a delicious meal and it just seems like the winds have been constantly shifiting this year. Every day, sometimes a few times a day, the wind direction changes. Half the time it's different between the time I leave my house to the time I get to my hunting spot. I can't recall a time when we've had a consistant wind for more than 24 hours all year.
Here's a good example - the forecast for tomorrow morning's hunt. If the wonderful, ingenious, infallable people at weather.com are wrong and this front doesn't move in when it's supposed toI could be set up in a spot for a North wind and have a South wind. Or I take a chance and hunt my south wind spot, figuring they will be wrong, and they'll be right for once and I'll still be in the wrong spot.Either way, I'm probably screwed.
Thank goodness for Scent-Lok and Gum-O-Flage.

Its been mostly consistent with what the National Weather Service has forecasted in my area during my hunts. Do you hunt any large riverbottoms by chance? I've never seen winds so inconsistent as hunting along a large river.

I'm not talking about conditions in my area persay, just wind directions in general. I spent 5 days in Southern IL at the Campbell Outdoor Challenge and I think we had one day where the morning and evening winds were the same. It seemed like we'd have a SSE wind in the AM, then a WNW in the PM, to a straight S in the next AM, turning to an ESE by the PM, etc etc. The wind just seems very inconsistant this year.

Screwy is not the word for it!! I live on the NE coast and the wind is pretty much always NE. My stands and approaches are based on that and I sure have been going the long way around to get to my stands. I have a west wind scheduled for tommorow AM and I NEVER see a west wind.
On a side note does anyone else think the wind seems to die down in the early AM.

I agree that the wind direction has been different this year.
I normally sent up my stands for NW and SE winds...but there has been alot of SW and W winds in my area the past few weeks

I styed out of my best spot this year.....waiting for THE PERFECT wind at the PERFECT time.....and I shot my buck before it got here....lol.
TOMORROW would have been that time......and I ain't going NEAR it.....
. I'm done huntin' bucks.
I absolutely deplore a N or NE wind.....and I've had a BUNCH of them, this year. Next year.....I'll sit these out, completely. I may not hunt 30 times, next year....and I'll easily beat last year's 46 sits, this year.

I couldn't agreee more. Lately, I have been on stand and had to come off stand with the risk of scaring deer permanetly.
On a side note, In Michigan, we have had alot of cross winds. It may be blowing both E and S... It's killing me!
