goodness, some of the stands I hunt are a mile in or more.
How many acres you hunting? Must be a big woods i take it.
Besides the land behind my house, which is 5 acres, I usually hunt public land and some is 150acres and some like the swamps for sika deer are well over 2000 acres like Black water refuge in MD. And if you want to get away from other hunters, got to go to the back or where others won't.

this week I took off for the rut, and hunted 5 different places, some are close walks like 1/4 mile, and other are a haul.

Thats why it kinda puzzles me when I see someone post its far in with 500 yards walk.

You guys walk to these stands in the dark with a flashlight, and get there in the dark. Do you wait for first light ? Or does it start to get light as your still walking ?

These 2 bucks that we are set up on are smart. They've been through shotgun drives, seen a few bowhunters. Been shot at all of their lives probably. They DO come out during the day, but stick to the woods, mostly. I WANT, I mean really want to harvest one of these 2 as my first buck. So I need the experienced advice from you seasoned guys to aid in my chances. HOW DO I POST AN ARIAL OF THE LAND ????
I don't know how to post an arial pic so i can't help ya there. I get to my stand a good45 minutes before it starts to get light, ibring a flashlight with me and only use it when i have too. If i'm hunting during the gun season thenits on every morning and night!

My closest stand to the road is .25 miles and I have stands that are .75 miles.
I used to use bright eyes but now it is strickly the GPS. Fire it up and walk straight to them or adjust approach based on the wind.
I always aim for a full hour of dark after I am set up. The best time of the day is just when it's getting light.
A wise man once said never shoot them farther from the road than you are willing to drag them.

My closest stand is 200 yards uphillinto the woods. My furthest is only 500 yards. I would consider these pretty short hauls.

Isn't the biggest!!!! i wish i were in the mindset that 800-1000 acres of wooded property wasn't the biggest. You obviously don't have to scrounge for property like some of us in IL. Nottrying to bea jerk, just interesting how different states differ in their offerings.

I have found that sticking to a quiet as possible morning entry in the woods of a morning hunt is best. On a property a buddy and i hunt, we have weed wacked paths and cleaned them of limbs to get in undetected and has worked great. Interestingly, this morning i had a deer under me no more than i got stepped on the platform that didn't know I was there, had to have been there when i walked in. Anyways, good luck and hope ya get em!!

This property isnt the biggest, probably a few thousand acres total with 800-1000 acres being wooded. It nice, awesome spot for central NJ. Northern and Southern NJ spots are beautiful, big and laoded with deer. Rolling hills, AG fields everywhere, but, this is less than a mile from my home and its prime for large bucks. Its just got me a tad puzzled[&o]

I have 3 or 4 different areasI set up in, depending on the wind, and the CLOSEST area is at least 300 yards from the parking lot. Maybe closer to 400.

The farthest is about 1/4 mile in, and one spot (if there's a south or south-east wind) is a half mile hike down the road, then another 1/4 mile or so into the woods.

I usually go between .5 miles and 1.5 miles on public land. As far as private land its hard to walk far when you only got a few places less than 40 acres to hunt. I walk in using a red led light and be as quiet as possible. I'm usually in 30 minutes before daylight, but I have got in at daylight before and seen plenty of deer also.

also, the deer are all over the place now with the rut in near full swing, so as of right now if your BIG bucks are on a pattern you are lucky!!
