Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Love to hear what ya'll think.....
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Not yet. I've got one about 120" but I'm no where close to my buck of a lifetime IMO.
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
NO. At least I hope not. Im always hopeing that I can do better then my last best or what would be the point.I just love to bowhunt. They are all good but I always think of that 150 that just may come see me.Thats what keeps me pumped.WILL IT BE TODAY??? You never know.
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Never will unless I stumble upon a 250" typical..My goals increase every year.
With the way we feed and manage deer herds these days they just keep getting better! |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I would hate to ever think that.;) I think it would take alot of the fun out of it for me. For me, hope springs eternal, and there is always the chance "HE" might show up. No matter how big a buck I have on the wall, I would always like to think the next better might come along. Now I know there reaches a point where that is extremely unlikely, but I ain't there yet!:D
We had a kid (16) up here a couple years ago shoot a real free range 192" buck. Where do you go from there? I think about one of my boys doing that, and well, it would make me sad thinking that they could hunt the rest of their life and never top it. In a way I feel sorry for him. |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
"Deer of a lifetime" doesn't HAVE to be the "biggest";)
Doesn't even have to be a buck. |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I haven't even seen my buck of a lifetime yet. Possibly saw a 150 incher a few years ago and that's the biggest I've ever seen, but that was on the way into the stand for an afternoon hunt. I guess I have shot a non-typical buck (not because of kicker points, but because of a moose-like webbing) so that's pretty cool, but that Buck of a Lifetime is still out there!
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
No. I have not even seen my "deer of a lifetime". I am working on it however.
Iprobably have gotten the best caribou I ever will though. |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Not even close...
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I havent. One of these days a main frame 10 point with a drop tine on each side will walk out under my stand and make me the happiest hunter in the world.:D
But then again, i might never see such an animal[:@] |

RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I don't think there is such a thing as a "deer of a lifetime". I say this because ther is always next year and you never know what your going to see. (unless you grow deer)
I remember a buck I killed back in 1997 and I thought that was it, my deer of a lifetime........was I wrong! There have been others since that have been better. I think (for me at least) my "deer of a lifetime" will be the last one I kill before I hang up my bow/gun forever. |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Nope, its a never ending goal. Ive shot big ones, but there are bigger out there.;)
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
ORIGINAL: GMMAT "Deer of a lifetime" doesn't HAVE to be the "biggest";) Doesn't even have to be a buck. I hold our camp record..I broke my fathers record in 2001..this is from a camp that was built in 1966 and in it's hey-day had 15-16 hunters. He had never relinquised the title since thevery firstday of the very first year. He had bettered it, buthad never been beaten by anyone else.SoI have killed a buck of many life-times but not my own. ;) |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I don't think there is such a thing. Deer hunting for me is about the experience, the challenge, the thrill. I'll be doing that as long as I am physically able. A 220 typical or a 350 non-typical won't satisfy my need for the experience. Don't get me wrong though, I'll take one if it comes along, but it just has little to do with why I enjoy deer hunting!

RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I don't think the buck of a lifetime is a deer but "the" deer. Its not a chance meeting with a world record under your stand. Its spending years scoutning and learning the habits and patterns of the one eight point that just seems to elude you for so long. The deer that causes you to leave a tag empty at the end of season so you will always have the oppertunity even at the last minute. The deer that fuels the passion.
That would be my deer of a life time. |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
could have...
im not sure if any deer will compare and give me the feelings that my first bow buck gave me this year. some of you guys may wonder what it is about me and that "dink" and why i look at it that way...i cant explain it really...yes, it only took me 2 years...but sometimes it felt as if id NEVER get it right...struggled with seeing deer period sometimes...struggled with making the shot..and, for the last years of my life, getting 1 decint shot at a legal buck a year, was all i got..IF i got that one... so my "dink" very well be my deer of a lifetime. ive killed 10 with the rifle...some awesome memories...but i dont think any mean to me what my first bow buck does... i very well may kill some big ole bruisers in my day...but i dont think i will ever "kill my first buck with a bow" ever again....thats WHY he made it to my wall... |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
No I haven't killed my buck of a lifetime, but if you'd asked if I'd MISSED the same buck, the answer would be different

RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Yes I have, it was my first. There is only one first in everything you know:)hence it is the 'deer of the lifetime'
That doe meant so much to me. Not even my first 'nice' buck could compare. However, there are many ways to judge that...even if one was to base it solely on inches of antler(which I do not) I would always know there might be a bigger one out there. |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I think everyone has the wrong idea of this one. I think it means more of a deer that ment so much to you that your never gonna forget it, not so much a buck, but the memory that comes with the buck, like with your grandfather when you killed it or even he killed it! if that makes sense. its not always about you, and maybe you hunted with someone that ment the most to you and they passed away and now all you have is that memory. and maybe thats what keeps you going. Thats more what i think this post is about.

not yet but I've seen him out there
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Yes I feel I have forsure with one, my current #3 archery buck in Idaho.. I killed himin 03. To me he is a deer of a life time. He grossed 184, netted 177 5/8 nt. Low 160's net typical.
Below, the kill (early sept).. the shed antler I found before killing himand the mount ![]() ![]() P.S. I don't plan on stopping with just one either.. but no matter what I get in my future, I will always look at him as a Buck of a lifetime..especially here in my home state of Idaho |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Tough question, I would like to say my first deer ever killed with a bow. It set in stone where I am today and look forward to the future as a hunter. From that point on the bar was set and with each kill it goes up. This year a booner, last year was a P&Y. Doe's have their place too with due respect.
Troy what was the spread on that beast? Ok I had to edit, that was deer of lifetime, now buck of a lifetime thus far is my 168 G, 160 N P&Y13 pointer which is also on cam. *My sons still have to hunt in the coming years* ![]() ![]() |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Congrats, Troy! That's what I'm talking about. I'm happy you recognize it as such. It doesn't do anything to diminish future seasons....it's just a "realization".
Thanks for posting him. He is something to be proud of!:) |

I just don`t see how anyone could be in the middle of there hunting career and say they have taken there best?I like to say there all great and fond memorys some stand out more than others but there all wonderfull. I keep hunting to repet that same felling |

I keep hunting to repet that same felling I agree, you never know what the future holds and that's why I posted that I don't think there is such as thing as a "Deer of a lifetime" until your "Hunting Life" is done. I for one plan on that happening when many years down the road my Grandchildren get tired of dragging their big ole grandpappy into the woods.:D When I put up my gun/bow and look back on my life that was hunting, it will be then that I can truly know what deer was the most special to me. I have a funny feeling it won't be one I killed.;) |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Up to this point in my life yes. That is subject to change tomorrow when I hunt again!
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I already killed a dear that means more to me than anyother I killed my first deer when I was 13 and it was with a bow it wasa 72# doe. I have since killed bucks ranging from 125 to the mid 160s as far as a buck of a lifetime I havent yet my buck of a lifetime will be one that nets over 170 witha a bow

RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Troy realizes he has. I post this because of something a co-worker (who I respect a lot as a friend and a hunter) said it to me on the ohone, during lunch. he told me that's a "Deer of a lifetime"....talking about my buck I shot, yesterday. He's not a high scoring deer. He's not the biggest deer in my Co. He's just a deer I have a 3-yr running history with......he's a 4.5 yr old.....and I have to wonder if he IS my deer of a lifetime.
I don't think there's anything wrong with feeling like you have taken your deer of a lifetime. Can't you always be pleasantly surprised???;) |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
Nope, not yet, have him on video though from two weeks ago. He's 13 scorable looks like, right brow is split, about 13" long. Just a monster, 6X6 with the split brow makes 13. Looks to be in the 180 range. Sure hope to get him in close. was about 75 yards away when I filmed him. So, if I get him, he is definitely the buck of a lifetime for me. I've shot a few 8 points, one is about 125, but nothing even remotely close to this one.
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I have always thought that if I could get a 160+ inch whitetail in MN...it would likely be a buck of a lifetime for me
Best so far is 145 |
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I have to seen the deer of a lifetime about 13 years ago. He was a buck I had been chasing for 4 years. I affectionately called him the rocking chair because that is what it looked like he carried on his head. I used to see him every summer, but once October rolled around he would disappear. The only time I saw him during hunting season was in mid-November 1994. He came by at 50 yards chasing a doe. He was that "one" buck for me, and that was the last time I ever saw him.

RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
i think thats one of those things like asking sports stars about their accomplishments. they always say it will be something to look back on when they retire, but while they are still playing, they still have business to do. thats how i look at it. and heck, maybe you can get more than one buck of a lifetime, be it a sentimental deer or a big one.

RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I keep upping my standards so no!
|
RE: Have you killed your "Deer of a lifetime"?
I think a lot of guy's "buck of a lifetime" will always be out in the field. Every year it is this deer that keeps us going. It is this deer that we share stories about and how we want that deer so bad. It is what got me started as a bowhunter. Hearing my father talk about a deer they all called "Christmas tree" cuz he had so many stickers. Nobody ever got that deer but that deer drove so many people to crawl in their stands day in and day out. I will say that many of us prolly have already shot our "personal best" but we always look to top that. If we didnt, we wouldnt have anything driving us to crawl in the stand at 6:00 in the a.m.
