I always look the the length of their face. A doe's face is longer than a button buck's and the button buck will have a really short face. Should be able to tell the difference that way.

In your place I'd let the young man make his own choice as to what to shoot, he'll be under enough pressure without being restricted, no matter how well meaning. Taking a kid hunting is never a bad idea, and letting him make his own mind up rather than pushing him to hunt your way will make things a lot better for him. Make the day all about him, the dividends it will pay will be more than worth it later on.

That said, look for a shorter body to head length ratio and squarish body lines for BBs, does are usually longer and leaner than BBs this time of year. If in doubt use the binos to check for a "belly horn", does don't have one. If it gets close enough check the head for buttons, and if there's any doubt then don't shoot.
