Default Almost had my first

I was finally able to get out and hunt a bit this weekend. Friday night was decent, had a cooperative wind and set up on the ground on the edge of some really thick cover and this past springs clear cut. Didn't see anything close, but did spot what looked like a pretty decent buck moving through the brush, rather I watched his antlers move through the brush! That was it for Friday.

Saturday morning I had some stuff to catch up on at home so I wasn't able to get out until around noon. Got set up in a narrow strip of hardwoods seperating cut corn to my rear and to my front was small CRP field about 50 yds wide with thick hardwoods starting up again after that. I had several heavily traveled trails all verging together a couple yards to my left where they then crossed a small fence. About 2:45 a good sized doe popped out of some brush in the middle of the CRP field and started coming my way. I drew as she was behind a small pine and she stops. I hold, I hold, I hold some more and she finally steps out. 20 yds broadside, money in the bag right? Wrong she keeps right on walking a perfect arc to my left despite my best efforts to get her to stop which include darn near yelling at her! When she does finally stop I can't swing to the left anymore because of the one branch giving me some cover up in that little oak tree! At this point, still at full draw mind you, I manuever a bit and am finally able to clear the limb and just able to get my pins on her for a shot but I was just too shaky from holding at full draw for so long. I decide to let the bow down, not wanting to risk a bad shot on what would be my first archery kill.

So overall it was an excellent weekend! I am a bit dissapointed at not being able to get that shot off, but happy I didn't risk the shot I was presented. I am going back to that same tree next friday afternoon and hopefully I'll be writing on Friday night about my First Archery Kill instead of the Almost First Archery Kill.

Good luck. Still plenty of time here. Hope you have plenty of season left, as well.

Both of you, thank you. We have Earn a Buck here in WI, and next weekend is the last weekend of Bowseason before the Orange Army opens fire, so I hope to get my doe next weekend and go for a buck during rifle season or late bow. We shall see how it all plays out...

Good luck to you both as well.
