Tonight the wind was howling. So I camped out in a box blind with my bow and video camera at a spot I haven't hunted all year long.
At 6:10pm I saw him. He was coming straight to me baby. Picture perfect. I picked up my bow and got ready. 40yds away in the thick underbrush, just trotting along, happy as can be. Then a terrible thing happened. He looked to his left (straight for me) and started stomping his foot and blowing.
He jumps back about 20 - 30 yds in some thicker brush and blows.........blows...........blows.......blows. It's now 6:39 and he's still blowing.
My nerves were so torn up. Then, he licks a limb and walks away. The other way.[:'(] (This is about the time I remember I have a video camera with me.[:@]
He was a main frame 10 point about 18 - 20" wide with a couple ugly kickers and one tine broke off. Not a thick rack and not so symetrical, but I dang sure would have took him.
At 7:00 I got out to look for what bothered him. I could not find a thing. (I didn't tromp around just viewed from my area.)
I mean, no dog, no human, no other deer, no nothing. And I know it wasn't me the wind was in my face and he was in plain view of me (no shot because of the brush) but he was staring down the hill just raising cain. There was a group of 12 turkeys that came through before him and went in the direction he was looking at, but I never heard them down there or saw them.
What gives? Just wasn't meant to be?

i had something similar happen to me last weekend, doe spooked upwind at 30 yards.... it was assumed he seen me.... i tend to agree... perhaps you as well? were you using any scents by chance? perhaps something he can associate with danger?

No attraction scents used tonightor grunts/rattle etc. I showered with scent free soap/shampoo. Clothes washed in the scent free stuff. Extra scent free spray before going to the stand, and then being downwind inside a box? No way he smelled me. And he was looking away from me bobbing his head, stomping, and blowing.

hehe, i didnt know it was gusting like that... ya, definately spooked them.. also, deer always seem to be on edge more with the wind gusting.... there eyes pick up motion incredibly well, and with everything moving, they know they are handicapped... i wouldnt worry too much
