Update on bad shot.

I got him. He went about 50 yds after crossing the road. I waited 2 hrs before trailing him, it was a relief. To those of you who supported my decision, I thank you. Those of you who said I needed to call in, or I am irresponsible, sorry you guys feel this way. Most of us can't take off like that, and I do not go into the woods with the attitude that Im going to make a bad shot. Things happen, I was blessed to find him as early as I did. I have 2 children and a wife that I left tonight to find this deer. I did what I had to do, I normally make good shots, I didn't see everyone jumping on GregH this way. Come on guys, we already have enough people out there against us, don't make it easier for them. We are a band of brothers in our passion.

Great job, ? How bout some pics.

Remember you left the same ones at home to shoot the deer that you left to go find it ,just putting it in prospective.

Congrats on your buck! I agree, not all of us can just change our schedule whenever we want to work around hunting. Some have to just hunt whenever we can.

RE: Update on bad shot.

GOOD work Va....you didnt make a horrible shot, like say for example hitting a twig on the shot last night and deflecting into lets say the buttocks of a buck and coming out midway through the deer on the opposite side kind of thing like me.....I mean my friend last night. :)

Good job man. When you said you found blood on the road, it sounded promising. I have hit them high in the liver and they quit bleeding totally.

He was a nice 8pt, not too wide but good tine length and decent mass. I will hopefully have pics on here by tomorrow. Bawanajim, you are right in the fact that I left them to go, but I only go when it is ok for me to leave, Im a very dedicated father, my wife wants me to go out and enjoy my hobbies. Not exactly sure what you are saying. Are yousaying I should not have gone? Please explain.Anyway, thanks again to all who helped me.

I just found both threads as well. I am glad you were able to find your Deer. Some of the responses from the other thread surprised me. If you would have not gone out tonight and looked and just waited till 3 tomorrow I could understand their responses but man. Like I said I am glad you found him. Post some picks for us why don't you. And Congratulations.

Once you shoot a deer it becomes your responcabilty to recover it and consume it,or make sure it is properly used.
Some how I doubt that as a school teacher today this early in the school year that your sick days are used up or that a small crime spree would be the direct results of you missing a few hours of work while recovering your deer.

You did the right thing thanks, Jim

RE: Update on bad shot.

Thanks bigcountry, I have to say, after reading some people's comments it has taken some of the joy out of finding this deer. I mean, some people think that Im not a responsible hunter. I have been hunting my entire 32 yrs on this planet, I have made bad shots and not recovered deer, but not many, and I have learned from those mistakes. I may have led on a bit about the shot being bad, it really wasn't all that bad. I mean, it was not where I wanted it, but good enough to get it done. Should I feel guilty about leaving my kids to hunt? Or about not taking tomorrow off? I had a plan for tomorrow if I didn't find him tonight/ I had someone to watch my 1st period class and then I have planning period for 1 1/2 hrs. so I would have been able to get out there if needed. Am I having to justify to myself??

Va--you did the right thing. I used to be a teacher and I know how hard it is to take off....the job I have now is even harder to call in "sick". I would be leaving alot of people in harms way. YOU DID THE RIGHT THING and found the deer. You should be proud of your buck and the concern you had for the animal. Obviously you care for the animal. DO not let anyone suck out of the fun on this one! Have a great week and feel great.

Ignorant comment. Mocking to say the least and not helpful at all.

I do have sick days, but I try to save them for when my kids get sick if I have to. I had a plan, if you my reply to bigcountry you will see . I know that it is my responsibilty, that's why I went back and found him, trust, noone wants a deer toi suffer or be lost because of bad ethics more than me, but my career has to come first and like I said, I don't go to the woods thinking Im going to have these circumstances, though I know it can happen, but I would have made it work.

don't put a whole lot of stock in a internet forum, and don't let anybody steal your thunder, everybody has or will lose one someday, i have been very blessed that i have very few non recoveries, but thru marathon tracking experiences (mine and other peoples) i have learned some very valueable lessons, the main one is never give up;)

glad you found your deer and look forward to the pics;)

I get into these lost deer, and seeing the outcome. You just to look past alot of the crap. You got to understand some if not alot of these posters, are kids.

People love to tear other down. I have been lucky this year, and not had to track much out of 4 deer. But know that feeling well of not knowing if your going to find an animal.

I am taking off all next week and hunting everyday. So maybe my big buck will roll by.

Congrads again.

Congrats on the perseverance of finding your deer. Dont mind what other people say. Some of us has jobs that you just cant get away from at the spare of the minute. Im glad you found your deer. Now get some picts of that deer with your kids and give that wife a kiss on the cheek for being understanding. And play the lottery so when you win you can hunt all the time and not worry about taking off work to pacify the others............;)

RE: Update on bad shot.

I have to say that from my memory of being a student...it was always a really big deal if teachers called in sick. I always felt that as soon as a teacher had a sick day...then I was able to take "SICK" (ditch class) days as well. You were definately right in worrying about your career first. A lot of people look up to you and you did the right thing here, just as most teachers try to do, by setting examples. Anywho, don't let anyone ruin this for you. I
I'm happy for you and hope to see pictures soon.

Bad shots do indeed happen. Glad you found him. I've been in this situation myself as well. Being honest about your shortcomings is indeed a noble thing. Now lets all hope that GregH finds his deer.

Vabowman 10-31-2007 07:02 AM

RE: Update on bad shot.

Thanks Sooner, I really did not expect that from this board. I just commented yesterday about how much class people had on here, oh well, a few bad apples don't ruin the bunch. Most guys on here were very supportive and helpful. I made a decision to go back last night, I felt confident that it was a good enough shot that he would be down. I have been on many tracking jobs that went south to know when Im pushing a deer, I knew if I didn't have him within about 50 yds I was backing out and going in the morning, I would have had to make some arrangements, but I would have fulfilled my duty as a hunter.
