Treestand aiming question for the experienced hunters...
 

I was just wondering where you aim on a deer inside of 20 yards shooting out of a tree? In my own experience I seem to lose half a deer when it ducks at the sound of the bow. Just wondering where you guys hold at on the deer when you shoot. Thanks in advance.

I draw, hold proper form, bend at the waist, and squeeze my release while aiming right at vitals.

I aim exactly where I want to hit. The only compensation is that I hit a couple inches hi around 13-15 yds.

It's a good idea to aim a little lower than you would if shooting from a flat position. This will compensate for the elevation along with the deer ducking at the sound of your bow string.

First thig you need to do is find out what kind of noise and how loud it is that is alerting the deer in the first place. Often times it's not how loud the noise is, but what kind of noise. Do what you have to do to get the bow as quiet as possible. Look mostly at the accessories on the bow. Plastic is a no-no.

As to where I aim? Right where I want the arrow to ihit with a 20 yard pin. With such a large vital (8") I'm not too concerned about being an inch or two high. Still end up with a low exit hole which is what I want.

Of course the first thing is bend at the waist...

I always split the the body into thirds and aim for the center of the bottom third on the oppiste (exit) side.....Always aim for the exit hole....

So lowering your arm rather than bending at the waist will cause you to shoot high? Not being a smart alek here..just honestly dont know. Had to learn all this stuff on my own. Killed a lot of deer with the bow but all my misseshave beenjust barely over the back.

Is the deer ducking as you draw, or as you shoot? Unless you're shooting very slow, I don't see how a deer could react fast enough to get out of the way of an arrow going less than 20 yards.

With my setup shooting roughly 270fps, it would take barely .2xx of a second to go 20 yards. If it's around 15 yards, that's roughly .15x of a second.

So what I would do, aim a hair low if it's under 20 yards. Like others said, bend at the waist..then let it rip!

Yeah they are ducking to jump at the shot. I am shooting 255 fps.....bow is pretty quiet but the shots are usually inside 20 as I wont shoot over 25 so it probably sounds like a gun going off to them that close.
