tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

why is that the biggest deer i have ever shot in my life gets away, granted i did hit him in the shoulder, my gold tip arrow snapped in half as soon as it hit him, he ran and ran and ran, i gave him 2 hours before i started looking, i followed the bloodtrail untill i found him bedded down by the little river, as soon as i got near him he got up and ran across a huge field onto someone elses land, i amfurious!!!thats it ive had it with mechanicals, what is a good regular broadhead?

Muzzy or G5's would be my choice I went with Muzzy'x again this year the new MX-3 But a bad shot's gonna be a bad shot no matter what head you shoot!

HMMM...hit the shoulder and you had enough blood to follow and kick the deer up ...Sounds like the broadhead did its job. It just wasn't deliver in the right place.....

Dont blame the broadhead on a bad shot...thats your fault...

Only 2 hrs....IMO you should have waited much longer....

I hope you find him

Depending on how far you followed this blood trail. Say 300yards? I would guess that broad head penetrated the shoulder, and Id continue the search after he is given time to lay down and get stiff. I use mechanicals, always have, never lost one deer with them. but you gotta put it in the sweet spot. When in doubt dont shoot. Course your always gonna have the unknown happen, but stay on him. Your allowd to track him on other property. I'd say you owe it to the deer to find him.

Just me tho

Like the others said it dosnt matter what you use if you dont make the right shot. I dont know when you shot this deer but I still would be looking for him.As far as fixed blades Muzzy - Strikers. I killed a buck this year with a Mech - Rocket 75gr Blew thru and stuck 6in in the dirt. That little sucker put a big hole in him. He made it 30 yrds.Got to go for the SWEET SPOT!!!!

So what heck were you aiming at??? you should be aiming for the same spot regardless of size...Its not tresspassing if you get permission..What does muzzle-loader season have to do with it....I cant believe your quitting so easily on, how did ya put it "the biggest deer ive ever seen!"

Quit making excuses and get out there and find the deer....

I'm sure he knows if he put it in the boileroom the bh would have done its job, but on the other hand I have
seen some horrendous shots still kill deer, so choice of bh can make a difference on a marginal or poor shot.

RE: tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

That shoulder blade is a funny thing I have hit them a few time in 45 years and seen arrow do diffident things. Hit a big bucks shoulder once with a 65 lb recurve and the 2117 alunimun arrow and the 140 grain broadhead went in broadhead deep and bounced out. Once with a 70 lb compuond and a carbon arrow with a 85 grain broadhead it shot through a 250 lb field dressed buck and hit the shoulder blade "paddle bone" on thet other side and shot through in and the arrow stuck in the ground. I hit a big one once and the carbon arrow went through the shoulder blade about 10 inchs and broke off and I got the deer. I can only remimber losing one hit in the shoulder blade. I see a bowhunter shoot a carbon through a doe once the carbon arrow broke the leg bone on exit the bone was sticking out the hole, A friend shot a buck once through the front part of the paddle bone angled in to the lungs, but man it hit him hard I was 200 yards to 250 yard away from him in my stand and heard it hit him, He did get a pass through the carbon arrow was laying on the ground and he didn't go ever far. Seen a friend hit a bull elk once in the shoulder blade at about 10 yards and the carbon broke of leaving about 8 to 9 inch in the elk, so must of made it through it. We didn't get him, but now I'm talking about with 65 to 70 lbs bows. From what I have seen over the years one time it will do one thing and the next time not.

Sorry about your lost, like they alway say some times #@#! happens, but there have been bucks taken before with a broadhead in there shoulders blades that they have been carrying for a long time. Maybe he will live to be hunted another day.

My favorite broadheads are G5 Montecs and Hellrazors both of those fly extremely well I've only had passthru's with both and both buried themselves in the ground a good 4 inches at 30 yards, mechanicals scare me since not all shots can be perfect broadside shots, plus I like haveing guaranteed large entry and exit wounds

go with the slick tricks or muzzy..and yes a bad shot is going to be a bad shot..but with a muzzy"type" head
u are going to pass through most of time and that deer will be deaddddd.

RE: tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

I also quit using mechanicals, after 5 years of using them I come to the conclusion they are not 100% capable of doing their job. Lat year using mech, I had 2 complete pass throughs and recovered, I also had 2 that failed to work, one hit the shoulder and had maybe 2" of penetration, lost that one, next one hit right behind the shoulder and had maybe 6" penetration, lost that one. It is the broadhead, it seems sometimes they crumple like the front end of a car during a collision and absorb all the KE and fail to get penetration. My bow is shooting 280 fps and that should never happen.
I challenge anyone to shoot a target with mech vs fixed and tell me which one gets more penetration. My Muzzy's sometimes blow through my target, my field points and mech will never do that.

I am using Muzzy 4 blade because they seem to fly better than the 3. My friend has been using them for years and seen some wild and poor shots he's made using them, but he always recovered.

RE: tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

I find it funny how so many people always blame equipment (Bh's etc.) when the problem lies in shot placement and/or their own mistakes. Crap happens even to the best bow hunter. I have not been bow hunting that long. The first thing I learned from my mentor was shot placement. "Take away their ability to breathe and you win every time""Wait for the right time and angle" "Aim for the exit hole" With this advice I have stood next to every animal I have ever shot at. Will I ever lose an animal? Probably one day I will. Know your limitations, that bow is not an 30.06. Why would you even try to take a shot like that? Especially on the biggest buck you have ever seen or a doe for that matter? I have read every excuse in the world on here and other places. My mech. broadhead didn't open or it opened up in flight. Or muzzys suck, no blood trail with a stinger etc. Most of them will work perfectly if the shot placement is correct. No the bloodtrail might not be that good or it might be great with almost any head. I am by no means an expert, never have I claimed to be.

That's a dead deer. work it out somehow and go get him. I have hit a deer square in the shoulder and it shatered the shoulder and buried into the off hand side. Not the best shot and sure would not be my first choice but the deer IS dead.....

RE: tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

From an elevated stand a shot through the shoulder really should kill the deer if you get enough penetration...i wouldnt be caught dead with a mechanical broadhead....go with MUZZY

RE: tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

I agree the most important thing is shot placement, however, to me there is a difference between mechanical and fixed blade broadheads. I used to shoot muzzy's, and loved them. I once shot a buck throught the front shoulder and knocked him right over, and I wouldn't take the same shot with a mechanical. I switched to Rocket Steel Heads, because I found they are easier to tune with the carbon shafts, and I've had good results with them.

Sounds to me like shot placement and shafts are more to blame here. I've shot many deer with aluminum and Carbon Express shafts, and I've never had one break. In fact, I've shot through mulitiple deer with the same Carbon Express shaft and its still in my quiver.

I shoot mechanicals, Spitfire XP 100gr. Never one problem with them, superb penetration and cutting diameter.

I had Tekkan's a few years ago, HATED them based on the fact that the blades always slid off the rubber band. Spitfires open on contact.

No go find your deer.

Any updates?

I can relate. When I was a kid, the first deer I ever pulled back on I whacked in the shoulder. I found out the next weekend a few guys hunting the other side of the road found her hobbling around..and put her down. Even had part of my arrow sticking out of her still..and they gave it to my gpa (which was the land I was hunting).

It's sucks, and it's sad..but use it as a learning experience. I did, and have never done that again.

Don't get mad at people for pointing out the obvious we didn't shoot the deer in the shoulder you did.Not the BH fault either.

RE: tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

I'm confused. Are you still finding lots of blood? Whats the blood look like? Bubbles? Where are you finding it? Ground? Brush? How many days has it been since you shot him? If this deer is still running strong and does not appear to be bleeding then this deer is long gone. And will probably live. But then again, how are you jumping this deer up time and time again if he is running and not showing any signs of injury? Im baffled. If you are walkign up on this deer several times and still finding blood, he should be expired by now. Im confused as of why this deer has not left the area, a big mature deer will leave this area never to return if he has encountered what he has.

Keep us updated im confused as of what is happening with this deer. I sure hope to see pics of this brute, he must be one tough SOB to be sticking around the area bleeding and no showing any signs up injury.

RE: tekkan 2's suck, any suggestions?

You are saying he is still alive after a day or two? Hemay survive then...doubt you got penetration into the chest cavity....and he is still in the same area?
