Best ever?? Who???
I know thishas been done before, but since Im new to the forum I gotta do it.. Who dod you guys consider the best whitetail bowhunter of all time current or past??? I will have to say Tom Miranda, although Dan Fitzgerald is real close.
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Depends are we talking old school hunters or new age land/deer managers??
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
I don't know how a person could really judge this but Myles Keller has shot piles of trophy whitetails and has done it for a long time
I have to say I am suprised that Tom Miranda's or Dan Fitzgerald's names would even be a part of this conversation but everyone is entitled to their opinion. |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
I'k going with Miles Keller....Heck of a bowhunter....and a lot off public land....jmo
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
...No doubt in my mind.
This Guy! <-------------------------------------<<<<< |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
There can't possibly be a correct answer to this! There are to many exceptional hunters who come from different parts of the country and have different opportunities and go about their hunting differently.
I tend to doubt it is one of the "celebrity hunters",I really hope it is some person who shirks the lime light and does it for his own personal enjoyment and challenge. |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Did you vote for yourself again Fran?
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Guy from MI will leave his name out of it
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
I'd vote for myself twice if I could.

Old Timers-Fred Bear
New Timers-Micheal Waddell |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
How about Ted Nugent?
|
Rephrase!!! Best ever????
Ok, I get it. Let us say all around bow hunter includes P&Y bucks, public land, private land, no high fence areas, knowledge of deer and patterns, tactics, etc. Let me rephrase!!!Tom Miranda is a good hunter on TV. I guess this is difficult to answer, so I will say what pro bowhunter do you admire the most??

RE: Best ever?? Who???
Dang...Nobody mentioned Noel Feather....:D:D:D
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Chuck Adams...First to complete the Super Slam. Probably the best with a bow ever, for anything. I was almost astounded that nobody had him up yet. No offense, but Tom Miranda and young Mikey Wadell have a hell of a long way to go to reach this guy.
http://www.bowhuntershalloffame.com/members/adamschuck/index.html Fred Bear....maybe. |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
This is a crazy question in my opinion. I really don't think we can compare hunting in terms of hunters against other hunters. It's not like tennis, where you can match them up. I do recognize that some hunters make more and bigger kills than others, but I'm not sure that that is the point at all. To me, hunting seems to be about me and nature, in the specific local that I find myself. There are too many factors, such as land management, crop rotation, genetics, disease, game laws, population density, and qdma to make a fair comparison about the deer themselves.
When I hunt, it's about me and the deer. Yes, I am proud of other hunters. Some of them have even acheived celebrity status within our ranks. If you are asking about which celebrity we like the most, that would certainly be entertaining. I personally don't care about shooting all the various types of legal big game. Turkey and deer are fine for me. However, I appreciate someone's goal to do so. Chuck Adams certainly earned my respect for being the first to do so. I guess I just don't know how we could compare who is the "best" or even why we would want to add that sort of competitive spirit and elitism to our noble hunting tradition and discourse. You probably didn't want that sort of response, so I apologize. To answer your question, SGT. Ken Bennett is the best hunter ever. He got me into the sport and taught me much of what I know. He's serving overseas on behalf of our country right now. He's the best I know because he brought me into a sport that I needed and took the time to nurture me in it. Thanks Ken. |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
That was a great response. I hunt because it is what I am good at, it is also my primal scream. Some guys play football, basketball, bowl etc.. this gets my soul, it has my soul!!! Well, so does Jesus, but you know what I mean. I love it. I just thought it would be neat to hear why some guys like certain bowhunters more than others, not really wanting a competition. Bowhunting to me is not a sport, it is part of me, in the same way that Christianity is a part of me.. you know??

AAHHHHHH.....Noel Feather..........man have not heard that name in a long time

RE: Best ever?? Who???
Nole Feather can just stay up in central illinois where he lives instead of coming down to Southern Illinois and hunting in other guys stands on private ground.....thats all i am saying!
I think the best bowhunters are just everyday average people who kill the best bucks there area has to offer consistently. No hunting with outfitters in my opinion. (I have no problem with outfitters, or hunting with them dont get me wrong). I just think its a lot harder to kill mature bucks other places. |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Stan Potts...LOL!!!
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Ok you said whitetail hunter. Tom Miranda isn't even close. Don't get me wrong I like the guy but best hunter...NO!
Whitetails Gene & Barry Wensel hands down. These guys live whitetails! And have killed and will still kill more big bucks then most of us ever will. Yeah Chuck got the super slam but he also had a lot of backing to do it. If he wouldn't have been interested in doing all the traveling. They would have just found someone else to sponsor that wanted to. Gene and Barry did it all themselves. No guided hunts. They scouted and learned whitetails 12 months out of the year. Darrall Dougherty |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
id say the most successful hunter in NA has to be chuck adams when it comes to bowhunting.....who knows about africa, from what ive read, any given PH over there has more skills than the best hunters from NA that head over there to hunt.
I vote for Chuck.:) but who really knows tho? |

RE: Best ever?? Who???
What makes the "Professional Hunter" better than you or I?
I say the most knowledgeable are: Waddell Stan Potts Myles Keller Alex Rutledge But there are so many in which I completely dislike that are so called professionals. Heck when I talked to an outfitter that Tom Miranda used, they said they had to put the kill shot on his Red Stag because he merely wounded it. They said his shooting skills were slim to none. Ted Nugent also can't shoot worth a darn either. This is probably one of the dumbest questions I have seen asked. If someone is looking up to these hunters theres something wrong, I only had one hunter I looked up to and that is my father! |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Without a shadow of a doubt "THE GREAT" Fred Bear!!
|
RE: Best ever?? Who???
i don't think you can really judge the hunters, but only judge the land. I would have to say anyone on this forum can go to the places the people on tv hunt and kill giants. Bring those people to a place like Jersey and PA and let them find and hunt quality deer. It is alot different.

RE: Best ever?? Who???
Hey, It's not a dumb question, I asked your opinion and you finally told me, you think your dad is the greatest hunter ever, fine. that is what I was asking, who you think the best whitetail bowhunter is or who you admire the most. You are lucky or blessed to have afather that took you hunting and share those memories with you, some of us didn't have that, I learned from own dumb mistakes, my father was not much of a hunter, he was farmer and not a good one either, but I love and he tried to do his best. Don't get so testy about the question, it is all in good fun!!

RE: Best ever?? Who???
They used to say about Don Shula the Miami Dolphins football coach for the real young here that he could beat you with his team and then take your team and beat you with your team. The point being that he was such a great coach he would get the best out of whatever circumstances he was given.
I agreed with the one response a gentleman here had made that you cannot even quantify a best, that the challenge is between the individual and his quarry. How do you define best, knowledge, book entries, number of deer taken? I guarantee their are some folks on this forum that can hold their own with any body. As it relates to the well known guy's I am a huge Randy Ulmer fan, although he is not known as a whitetail hunter.Hard to look past Miles Keller or that gentleman from West Virginia who has some sick amount of Pope and Young entries. This made for TV hunter don't do much for me,I want the guy or gal who does their own scouting sets their own stands etc. If any one want s to be inspired by the effort to be excellent read through the journals here a recent one written by Troy Pottenger speaks volume about committment and dedication. Also a great book I just finished by Cameron Haynes Back Country Bowhunting,it is very hard not to respect what these folks put in to their hunting. What was the question?LOL. |
RE: Best ever?? Who???
Ok then, Don Shula or Tom Landry??? Naw, I ain't going there!! LOL!!! Good point, hey, I know you can't measure who is better, I just wanted to see who people respect and don't respect, I enjoy watching all the shows and videos, it gets me pumped, but I take it all with a grain of salt. I have been blessed to kill several very nice bucks, and 2 of them very exceptional deer....none of the stuff I watched on tv had anything to do with it, I learned through trial and error, and simply being around and obssesed with this thing we call hunting!!!

ORIGINAL: DropTine249 AMEN ! You come into NJ and it all changes. Youll see monster after monster after monster on our trail cameras. Youll get in the woods and maybe see 1 in 5 that you saw on the camera. MAYBE. Its hard huntin' deer that are elusive. Thats why NJ hunters that go out West are so productive. Its a challenge though and I like it. In my personal opinion, you cant say that there is a "best whitetal hunter" anywhere. Look at these guys that killed some of the biggest bucks ever, alot are old, hick, farts that know little about hunting and got lucky. Alot are young kids that just spent enough time in the woods to get lucky. They may never even take another respectable buck in their lives !! Then, look at some of these guys that may not have ever killed anything over 120'' or even 100'', but, they've killed 2 every year for many years !! I have more respect for THAT guy then the hick or kid that got lucky !! How do you know that all these other guys you are speaking of know nothing about hunting? Why are deer in NJ tougher to hunt than everywhere else? Don't you think it is alot easier to get trail cam photo's of nice bucks than actually kill them anywhere else in the country...not just NJ? Who are all these NJ hunters that are so succesfull out west compared to everyone else? You made the statements so I am asking the questions... |
