Spotted! Mountain lions in Kansas

Let me say this first, my brother is not the type toexaggerate stories or lie about anything and ive never seen him so shook up over anything. Anyways, my brother was taking a jog around our land in northeast kansas when he came up to one of our food plots. He said he saw a tan colored figure dart across the field, huncheddown, from the tree line, across the food plot and too the edge of the native grasses. He said it had a really long tail and appeard to be a huge cat( not a bobcat). He then said he stopped to look at it (it was around 100-150 yards away) and all of a sudden it crouched down and darted into the tall grass. All of a sudden he looked at the top of the hill and it popped up. He said it was the fasted he had ever seen anything move in his life. As he stood there watchign it, it sat on its hind legs and just watched him, not moving a bit. My brother said he had never ran that fast in his entire life.

Now my brother is a hunter(has been one for many years) and he said it was like nothing he had ever seen(he'd seen numerous bobcats deer etc) and he is positive its nothin other thana mountain lion.

Now this kinda scares me considering i have to walk to my stands in the dark of the morning, and when the sun has set. All i know is that if i see a mountain lion anytime while im hunting his ass is as good as dead( even though theres almost no chance of me seeing it again haha)

Don't worry, they kill quickly with a minimum of pain. They just go for the throat and before you know it, you're talking to the Lord.

I am from North Central Kansas and I have heard of a few people seeing them. Make sure you only shoot one in self defense or the KDOW will probably be knocking on your door. Hopefully he is not in your tree when you get in it some morning ;).

about 20 min away from me the pa game comission has released 8 mountain lions to control the yote population. i know how you feel about walking to your stand. one guy said he heard something "following him" in the morning walk to his stand, when it got light the mountain lion was there, he shot it, called the game comission and told them the ear tag number. he didnt get into trouble or anything. everyday when i go out i fear the same

If i go in the woods i want to be the one hunting and not the hunted. Anything thats trying to hunt me will get an arrow in his ass.

I consider if self defense if im hunting and a puma crosses my path and all i have is a bow! They can have the cat , all i care about is saving my own butt

I was just telling you that because I had heard a story in the past about a guy who shot a mountain lion that had a tracker inplanted in it. Not sure if it is true or not. Just hate to see someone get into trouble over a dangerous animal that the fish and game has most likely released into the wild. I have the same feelings you guys all do. I don't want them around either!

That post calls for some proof - other then "someone told you so", "I heard it at the coffee shop", or my minister says.

Why do you think there couldnt be a mountain lion in Kansas? We have had a few spotted in MO. A guy in Northern Mo got one on his trailcam...Personally, I wouldnt feel comfortable going out in the dark knowing that there may be somethig hunting you.

I don't think it's that hard to believe. I live in southeast Nebraska and there has been proof of more than a couple mountain lions in Nebraska. Last year there was one that was run over on the freeway in Omaha, as well as one that was shot by a police officer in a small town in central Nebraska. I'm not saying that there are starting to be mt. lions actually living in the area, but they do pass through. If the mountain lion saw you and got out of the way, I would say he/she is prolly gone by now. Start to worry when you see both a male and a female in the area. THen maybe, they are actually using your land as a core area.

RE: Spotted! Mountain lions in Kansas

Not hard to believe for me. They are in SE Oklahoma why wouldn't they be in Kansas In fact the Oklahoma wildlife department has changed the rules for shooting them.

I hear the wolves howling and barking on my way into the stand but they don't scare me that much because you can hear them coming. Now that we have mountain lions here in minnesota it gets a little scary because there have been lots of sightings where I hunt. I wish Minnesota would let us carry a pistol or I'm gonna be walking in the first light rather than a half hour before light.

Some Wi hunters may have heard about the cougars that have been spotted through out the state, also beware of the rattle snakes that the dnr released in Monroe County to get the turkey population udercontrol.

Tom Says: "I don'tget itKevin, I interviewed his brother, andhe said he warned him. Just goes to prove, you can't tell kids nothing these days!"

Well you know the DNR loves to exagerate on numbers. I have watched the turkey population drop drastically all over the state. I do alot of traveling and where you used to be able to drive past a field where you used to see 50-100 birds in a flock youre lucky if theres 5-10. Same goes for the deer herd numbers. What the hell is going on?

In our state you can legally shoot any animal (bobcat, coyote, etc.) thatis threatening livestock, course they might ask why you shot 'em with a bow and not a rifle ...

I believe there can be mountain lions in Kansas. On a property adjacent to our land in NW MOa guy turned in game camera photo of a male mountain lion to Mo. Dept. of Conservation and there was another siting near Chillicothe, Mo. that was reported. That isn't that far away from Kansas and most likely the mountain lions came from the west anyway.

RE: Spotted! Mountain lions in Kansas

NWPA, I talk to game commision guys quite often, and while they are very sneaky sometimes I dont believe your story on the 8 mountain lions let loose.. Everytime I talk to them they say they are not here, they wont be released here, and they have no intentions of bringing them here.. They also say that none of the sightings are true, blah blah, I dont believe they would bring in mountain lions to control the yote populations.. hell our yote populations are not even that bad... they need to control the yotes out west.. not in pa..
