How about instead of berating the guy and talking smack about him on an internet forum where it will never help him at all(by the way, this is not directed at the original poster), you explain to him the importance of learning how to properly use his bow. Maybe offer to take him somewhere and help him get his bow sighted properly. Tell him that if he buys you a beer(pop, bottle of water, whatever) you will show him how to make the thing work right, then explain to him that he should seriously consider practicing with it for a time before taking it out into the woods.
If you have even the slightest communication skills, you can do this without sounding arrogant and without making him feel like a complete idiot. Some people want to hunt, but are intimidated by every thing that goes with it. They don't have somebody to teach them the CORRECT way to do things. By bad mouthing a person and making them feel like a kid that just messed their pants, all you are doing is saying, "You're not good enough to join my club!" Is that the type of image that you want to portray? You get a lot further by treating a person like an adult and gently nudging them in the right direction than you do by comlaining about it where it will do them no good. |

Deepdiver, I did try to explain how to paper tune a bow to the guy. I could tell by his expession,he had no interest in what I had to say. Talking to him more about it would have just made it worse. His "buddy" was the influence in that situation. I couldn't change his mind with his buddy[ a familiar voice] right there telling him what he should do. You just can't fight that kind of influence. If I knew the guy it would be different.

i think you did the right thing in a way
we need all the hunters we need and you might have put him off the sport . But two we must do everything we can to make sure we are ethical when we hunt I would have went to the manager and asked why they just let there employee sell a guy a bow broad heads and everything knowing he was going out tomorrow and having never shot a bow and they let him take his with out sighting it in there if need be . They are more at fault then you the guy or even is buddy the gander mountain here has a range you can shoot for 20 bucks a month or 5 bucks an hour i do now that when i got my reflex shot it and i was not even good enough i would have hunted the Hindenburg lol with a flaming arrow and i had shot one before |

i dont think some 1 will hit anything but the earth if he has never shot before.

I worked at a local sporting goods store. We have a large Hmong population here. A guy came in and asked me for a arrow. I asked what size do you need. He shook his head and said one arrow for hunting. I again asked what size. He said it doesn't matter. When I tried to explain to him it doeshe just wouldn't listen.
He did understand me because he also asked for treesteps, I showed him our treesteps, then and instead of paying the 2 bucks or whatever they were he elected to purchase 8 of the little bow holder hooks for treesteps because they were cheaper. rofl I couldn't believe it. Hmong people are small but thet are not that small. It's frustrating. I have several other stories that have happened but it will only make you angry. It's unfortunate that we basically have our hands tied. What can you do? |
RE: For the betterment of the sport or keep my mouth shut.
I don't know if I would worry too much. The first thing he'll have to do is figure out how to get close enough to a deer to get a shot. Not the easiest thing to do for a beginner. Maybe he'll get started practicing and get good enough to shoot when he gets the chance.

I'm rather comfortable being the know-it-all jerk who just tells everyone exactly what I think.
The good thing about people like that... They never get anything anyway, so it really doesn't matter. Who it DOES hurt is the poor schlep who is out there scouting his ass off and hanging stands all over the place. Now, he's gotta contend with this dimwit tromping all over his woodlot, running every deer in the county back to its bed. |
