Another T.V. Show Mistake!!!

I was watching Babe Winkleman Outdoors last night on TOC and he had 2 guys from Mathews 'Bou hunting. They showed the guys shooting 3 bulls 50-70 yards away. One guy brag that he ranged the bull at 70 yards and aloud 18 inches because the wind was blowing so hard. Now to me shooting at anything 50-70 yards away is extremely unethical let alone having to allow 18 inches for windage. Did anybody else see this show? What do you all think?

If they are extremely confident and have practiced at those distances, then that's their call. There are guys who shoot lights out to 80-90 yards in field shoots. I saw Dan Fitzgerald do it a couple of months ago. He zipped an elk at 70 yards and then proceeded to explain that he practices it. I wouldn't do it, but, then again, I'm not any good out to 50 yards, much less 70. I don't necessarily think it is a good example for us "Joe Bowhunters." A newbie might see it and think it is ok. I think Dan did it right by explaining that that is not the norm and should only be done by someone who has practiced it over and over.

That guy was George Dixon, Winner of FOUR 3-D Archery World Championships, TWO IBO National Championships, Five consecutive National Team Chammpionships, 1997-2001 and EIGHT Shooter of the Year awards since 1997! I would say if anyone had the resume for taking those shots, George is the one. Both animals he shot were quick humane kills. Obviously, George didn't have any doubt as to whether or not he could make those shots. Ethical all boils down to knowing your abilities and staying within your ability. It would have been unethical for me (and most other people) to take those shots, but I didn't think it was unethical for George to take them. You couldn't have walked up and put your finger on a better spot than he hit on either animal.

Silentassassin-

I'm going to raz you a little "Eight Shooter of the year awards since 1997", that would make it 2006, assuming the award is given out after the previous year. I'm sure you meant that he has received shooter of the year awards by various organization and has received eight since 1997. Is that right?

With a handle like"Gutshot" how can you question ethics? .....

So how far did these Caribou go?

I can't tell you if it was ethical for these two men two shoot these Caribou.I never practiced with either of them and I wasn't there.

If all three bulls were clean kills and not GUTSHOT, then I see no problem with it.Awhile ago on this board I told someone they were unethical because they shot at the rear spine of a deer. Many told me I was wrong because it was the only shot he had. I can't wait to see where this one goes.

I also saw the show. It was amazing. I wouldn't take that shot but those two guys are the best in the world. All three of the kills were quick. They both hit their animal perfectly. Tune in next week George is going to take another one.

RE: Another T.V. Show Mistake!!!

The finished product that you saw on t.v. was a bull standing a mile away, a shooter letting an arrow go, and then a dead animal that doesn't mean that they were "quick clean kills". With editing they could've "GUTSHOT" all three and did the perfect shot holes after they found the animals. Don't beleive everything that you see on TV, editing is a wonderful thing. But I don't care who you are and how many awards that you have won, it's unethical to shoot at a live animal 70 yards away with the wind blowing so hard that you have to give your arrow 18 inches windage. IMHO When your shooting targets, if you make a bad shot nothing suffers but on a animal if your windage is off or you get a gust of wind somewhere in that 70 yards you've got a wounded animal.

Gutshot are you accusing them of doing this, or is it just a theory?

I don't buy into the conspiracy theory I saw the program and I saw at least one of the animals fall where it stood. I wouldn't shoot that shot but I don't have that kind of skill. Those guys have far too much to lose in reputation to risk a hack editing job to cover up anything.

THWACK!
