Default best way to sharpen a knife

i bought a Remington knife with a gut hook on it from gander mountain and it will not even cut the hair on my arm.

I went to walmart today they had a nice Gerber with a rubber handle

looked just like the rem. knife

but it was razor sharp and cost 3 dollars more then the rem. which was 20 bucks

should i just try and sharpen the rem. knife it seems like the bevel is small and you can hardly see it or just hand out another 20.00 and buy the Gerber

if i should sharpen the rem. what is the best way to sharpen a knife cheaply i have done it before but have never been to good at it

usually just buy a hand sharpener that has a grip and you just run the knife down it and two little white bars sharpen it. But i do not wont to mess the knife up or make it any duller

Easiest way to get and keep a quality edge on your knives for a novice is to invest in a Lansky or Gatco set and read/learn how to use it properly. Once you get a good edge with one by setting the proper angles it's quick and easy to maintain it to surgical sharpness.

Exactly what he said!! The lansky will cost you around $40-80 I think whichever one you decide to get. It will definantely pay off in the long run, haha if I had to buy a new knife everytime my knives went dull the bank would love me because I would be taking out alot of peronal loans!!!!

Those guys use a good sharpener. I use a belt sander with a fine belt. Actually a used fine belt. It will give you a polished sharp edge. If your not used to one the lansky would be best.

How in the world do you guys have such luck with the lansky? Once I attach the rods to the stones.....it's a pain in the ass to use. Do you guys have yours mounted to a bench or table? I've only held mine to use it.

Would that make a huge difference?
