I still like to spit on a nice wet stone. Sure its tough with some of the steel out there but half of that stuff is harder than it needs to be for a hunting knife.
Whatever you use it sure is nice when you end up with a near razor sharp edge.

I agree with most of these guys, go with the Lansky.

To answer your first question though, how to get the first knife sharp...you return it and tell them you want a new one and you want it sharp. It should be fine, however, if they give you a hard time ask for the manager and make a big deal.
