RE: Proud to eat buck tag soup?
I haven't had a buck tag go un-filled in 15 years, and I'm not about to start now. For me, tag soup is a magnanimous failure. Make no bones about it, when father time is ticking down on archery season, this guywill take any legal deer without a moment's hesitation. If I have to sit the last3 days of archery season dark-to-dark in a soaking November rainstorm, damn near froze to death, I'd do it just to shoot a ratty looking 4x4.
Maybe if I thought the deer would have a fighting chance to survive the onslaught of rifle season, and meet again 1 year later, maybe I'd pass...but honestly...they have no chance in the areas where I hunt. Everything dies on 11/26/2007. The PA Orange Army is Judge, Jury and Executioner. They pass on nothing. Obviously, if I'm fortunate enough to have already filledone buck tag, and I'm hunting on a second tagin anon-resident situation - like this year - I couldn't care less if I eat that tag. I'm waiting on a big deer now. But no. Under no circumstances will I finish an entire archery season without laying a buck down. |
RE: Proud to eat buck tag soup?
I have done it and will again but I never am proud of it. In fact if pisses me off for months. Getting out smarted by the dominant buck sucks. I'm proud when I win.

RE: Proud to eat buck tag soup?
Well I wouldn't say I am proud of not filling my buck tag..... More driven if anything....
I have a criteria and even if the stars were to only align every 5 years for me to fill that tag based on thatcriteria thanso be it. |
RE: Proud to eat buck tag soup?
To each his own. I personally won't shoot a buck that I wouldn't consider mounting. My buddies yell at me when I tell them I passed a small 8(basket rack)or a 5 point as the season nears the end, but my whole thing is that I would rather shoot a mature doe and fill the freezer than to take out a young immature buck. I have not shot enough deer to be extra chosey,(meaning holding out for a P&Y) but I do have a benchmark that I strive for every year and if I eat tag soup in the process, so be it.

I think a lot of people are overlooking this statement in the original.......
Isn't the next best thing to getting "your" buck......realizing that you had the discilpline not to take one that didn't meet your standards? |
RE: Proud to eat buck tag soup?
Hunting should be like anything else in life, who gives a phuck what someone else says or does. If you are happy withtaking a small buck take it! If you are happy knowing you can wait till the big one walks in, awesome! It shouldn't matter, I hunt for myself and my believes, they my not be the same as yours and if they aren't kiss my arse cause I could care less!

ORIGINAL: GMMAT I think a lot of people are overlooking this statement in the original....... I would say "Sure filling your tag is THE goal..... but the next best thing is if I fail it will only increase my drive and desire to succeed in the future." I see what you are getting at with your statement however.... I just do not feel it directly applies to my mentality. Also, I agree there is nothing to be ashamed of. |
RE: Proud to eat buck tag soup?
Good enough, Buckeye.....but that sentiment is inferred. I wouldn't think the "mentality" of the groupI'm eluding to would have it any other way.
We're actually in agreement (I think???;)). |
