ORIGINAL: NEW61375 :eek:Huh? I think we have all seen similar posts and photos(bear, deer, roadkill buck, etc.). Just telling a story of events in your area. A pic of a dead deer is a pic of a dead deer, how it dieddoesn't make it disrespetful to post, IMO. |

That is a shame. So what is the total amount of does that have been taken out of the herd this year by arrows, cars, fences, etc? Just curious.

To my knowledge......22. I'm sure there are more I don't know about. Also....all the ones I "know" of....have been does.

sad sight to see thats for sure...
id stick with your plan Jeff. when things like that or car accidents etc are high occurances, it means 1 thing...too many of them. honestly, you could kill 30 this year and MAYBE youd see less deer next year. it takes alot of deer being removed to see much results. dont forget most of your does are going to drop 2 more this spring...so take every deer you dont shoot and add 2 more to the herd for next year...if you want to be fair, double not triple the numbers...some does wont breed..some will get hit on the road or stuck in fences etc...either way you get the idea...deer herd can grow alot yearly...removing a couple just isnt going to show much effect... |

I received this pic in an email today. The bulls started fighting on opposite sides of a fence and wrapped up 100 yds of fence in the process. What a shame!

When deer get hung up in between the wires it's almost certain death because they panic and always tighten the restriction.
Many years ago during the summer while in college, I worked for the state road and occasionally we would find things like this. One day we found a fawn that had tried to jump the fence and got tangled. He was still alive. Many of the guys said just kill him as he'll never let you help anyway. I was determined to try however and told one of the guys to grab the wire cutters and he could cut while I held the deer (if possible). As soon as we got down to him, it looked even worse (in terms of pain for him) then I could have imagined. He was caught half-way between the hooves and his knee joint on both back legs and the wire had rubbed him bare. There were many yellow jackets and flys getting into his bare meat (kind of like that picture GMMAT) and that had to be excruciating. I climbed the fence (a couple of posts down from him to reduce the vibration), managed to wrap a big flannel shirt around him and hold him. He was struggling hard and it was all I could do to hang on for the second or two it took the guy to cut the wire. As soon as the wire was cut, I let him go and he took off running, although he was running wierd as if shot in the butt (kinda draggin it--I guess I would be too:)). Instantly we noticed that his mom was nearby and must havejoined him in the brushy field he went into. He had disappeared into the field about 50yds from us. Was a good feeling that I'll always remember. Don't know if he made it but he had a chance. |
