RE: How many have you.......
I came close one time on a nice buck during the rut. I was walking in, just barely light out. The buck heard me walking in the leaves and charged at me with it's head down and grunting the whole way. I had my climber on my back. I got an arrow nocked and he stopped behind a tree, looking around it and glaring into my eyes at 15 yards. I aimed for his neck but stuck the tree instead. He did a backflip and came closer! I tried to nock another arrow but he turned and walked away slowly with his hair standing up and stiff legged. I still get goosebumps when I tell the story. It was a great experience.

RE: How many have you.......
My first nine years of bow hunting was on the ground, so I have been lucky enough to kill many from that position. My favorite story was a Thanksgiving morning I took my two youngest daughters with me. I had one sitting beside each leg in heavy camo coats while I stood watching a doe trail. About half hour after first light I see a doe comming and draw. When it gets in front of us I let it fly. Well sure enough I hit her high and she falls right there in front of my girls flopping and squalling. Going from hero to zero I quicklyadded a follow up arrow. It gets better. This fine shot was all of 12 yards away. Right after the second shot I hear a grunt and sure enough a buck is comming up the same trail. I whisper to the girls a buck is comming. This buck stops right behind the doethen walks between her andus putting him at litterally 5 yards away from me and my girls. Its a basket rack 8 prolly going 200 lbs. My girls have a death grip on my legs and this buck isn't moving. I peek down at each girl and I tell you I have never seen eyes so big. This bucks wondering why this doe isn't moving along. Well after atleast a couple minutesof terrifying torture on the girls I let out a holler and that buck jumped over the moon. A once in a lifetime expierence we will never forget. I'm gutting this doe and in a moment that would make any red neck daddy proud my youngest ask "Daddy, when your done can we go to Mcdonalds?":D:DThats my girl right there.

RE: How many have you.......
First year bowhunting, I was walking to my treestand and just happened to look to my left and seen a forkie making a rub about 30 yds away. I shot, I missed. Still it was a great experience.

2. Both does. While scouting I walked up on them bedded and snuck in. Thrilling tale isn't it?

RE: How many have you.......
I've done it several times. A couple times with my 7 year old son with me. We've backed up into thickets at trail heads, food plots, etc and just waited. I will say I've only taken does doing this, but what a rush.

RE: How many have you.......
In 2001 I was not having a great season. It was Nov 14th last day before gun season. The Farmer left about 15 row of corn in. It was really windy. I saw a deer coming across the field. I got down and hauled arse behind the corn to cut him off. It was perfect, he step out and i wacked him. Only deer from the ground for me.

RE: How many have you.......
I've taken two from the ground with no blind. Both were hunting pastures with small drainages in them.
The second was a seven point buck that I rattled in several times before legal shooting hours. Everytime he started to leave, I'd hit the horns and he'd circle back. I was finally able to get a shot at 34 yards. I try to hunt a couple times a year from the ground just to change things up. It seems like deer look up alot more these days, lol! GH |

RE: How many have you.......
I've taken a few from the ground and occasionally will hunt from the ground depending on the circumstances. My favorite hunt was on the ground in a riverbottom........ I killed a 7 pt. buck while rattling, scraping, grunting(the whole 9 yards) while staying low behind a dead fallen down tree, surrounded by 7 ft. tall weeds. The wind was perfectly from the west, the buck came in looking for a fight, I stayed as low to the ground as possible, raised my bow off the ground, and shot him through the heart at 12 yards. Best hunt I ever had.
Below are my two best bucks, both taken from the ground (unintentionally I might add). Lots of luck and the circumstances were unbelievable. The first pic was a buck taken with my LocOn Spirit stand on my back......to make a long story short I had to stretch out from behind a water oak to take the shot. He was 8 paces from me and directly facing me when I shot him through the chest with his head raised(only time I've ever taken a frontal shot). 2nd pic is my best buck taken while hiding in some thin brush at 25 yards. Wrong pics.:( |
RE: How many have you.......
I got my first one this year. I look forward to killing some more this way in the future. Its a whole different kind of hunting...
