How many have you.......

Killed a deer on the ground withno blind just you and the woods? Story to tell? No tree stand at all. Archery equipment only.

My dear Fraley (tony),

I have killed 3 bucks from the ground with no blind and 1 doe. Of those three bucks one includes my 130" from last season.

I got stories up the wazoo of many other deer as well. I used to hunt about 70% of the time from the ground with no blind and 30% out of a tree. These days its more like 90% tree and 10% ground.

I've killed 2 and missed one. All does. The miss was with my longbow. It would have most likely been 3 of 3 had I had the compound.

RE: How many have you.......

What kind of longbow do you use? Recommend that over a recurve? I need to research those 2 bow a bit more.

RE: How many have you.......

I have one made by lakevalley. It's a small custom bowyer.
Longbows are fun to shoot. But I would recommend shooting both a longbow & recurve before you decide. Generally the recurves are going to be a bit quicker. The doe I missed, ducked A LOT at only 15 yds. My longbow is fairly slow.

Thank You, recurves shorter also?

The first deer I ever took was on the ground. It was a doe, and she walked past where I was sitting in some brush, I got up and walked a few yards down a dirt logging road and she stepped out broadside to me at 30 yds.

I have, just hid in a fence-row, used some weeds to break up my outline..Put a scentbomb out in the field. When the 8 pt stuck his nose in the scent bomb..I drilled him!

Several. Heck, when I started bowhunting there was no such thing as a climber or even a stand available. I remember climbing up in trees a couple times and hanging on to limbs for a platform, but mostly you hunted from the ground. I remember when the first Baker climbers came out. I bought one instantly and thought I had died and gone to heaven. That was just a platform and you hugged the tree and pulled yourself up. It was great..... until the first time it lost it's bite and I slid down the tree like a train wreck. Took all the skin off my arms and face(chin and nose). Hunting from the ground is no problem, you just have to get everything right, the wind, your movement and some luck. :D Even in recent years one of my best spots was a ditch running through a big field. Another one was sitting on a dove seat under some washed out tree roots in this little stream watching a stream crossing.

The doe in my avatar was killed from the ground with no blind. It was my first deer killed with a bow. I sat with my back to an oak tree in deep shade looking out at a pasture. I had seen deer feeding on the acorns falling from the oaks and decided to give it a try. There was a blow down to my right and a cedar to my left. The oak had overhanging branches coming to about four feet from the ground. I got in and settled about an hour before daybreak. I was pretty comfortable with my back against the tree. About 1/2 an our after sunrise two does came in from around the deadfall slowly moving and eating acorns. One stopped 10 yards in front of me. She was standing in direct sunlight and I was in deep shade. She didn't notice me draw. I saw her fall about 40 yards away.

No deer, but 1 big ole turkey gobbla. It was cool. Kneeling beside a tree in some tall grass I called in 2. Both on full strut, and luckily they both turned their bums to me at the same time. End of story, for one of them anyway.

I shot a doe when I was 12 siting right on the edge of a filed the deer would come out about 13 yard infront of me and I got the first doe that cam in. I had no blind or tree stand

RE: How many have you.......

One doe, last season, on the ground with no blind. I was still-hunting with my bow toward a feeding area in the evening. She stepped out to cross a "human" trail that I was using to be quiet and almost freaked me out. Kind of didn't seem real. She looked right at me and we both stood completely still. I knew that if we stayed like that she would eventually run off. So I raised the bow, kind of waving it like the leaves that were near us in the wind, drew back and let if fly. She was at about 20 yards, and only ran about 30 before falling.
Good question, I like reading these stories as well. I hope to have another after this year. I've got two hundred acres to hunt, but I'll be hunting from the ground the entire time.
Good luck everyone,
KP

My very first archery kill wason the ground while stillhunting with a recurve. I was 16 years old so that was a while (77 bowkills) ago. Since then the only couple of others on the ground without a blind have been purely chance encounters while getting in and out to a stand

None, but that is not from lack of effort. I have had several close encounters with big bucks on the ground with me tucked into something to break up my outline or just stillhunting, but havenever connected. Its fun though.

I came close one time on a nice buck during the rut. I was walking in, just barely light out. The buck heard me walking in the leaves and charged at me with it's head down and grunting the whole way. I had my climber on my back. I got an arrow nocked and he stopped behind a tree, looking around it and glaring into my eyes at 15 yards. I aimed for his neck but stuck the tree instead. He did a backflip and came closer! I tried to nock another arrow but he turned and walked away slowly with his hair standing up and stiff legged. I still get goosebumps when I tell the story. It was a great experience.

RE: How many have you.......

My first nine years of bow hunting was on the ground, so I have been lucky enough to kill many from that position. My favorite story was a Thanksgiving morning I took my two youngest daughters with me. I had one sitting beside each leg in heavy camo coats while I stood watching a doe trail. About half hour after first light I see a doe comming and draw. When it gets in front of us I let it fly. Well sure enough I hit her high and she falls right there in front of my girls flopping and squalling. Going from hero to zero I quicklyadded a follow up arrow. It gets better. This fine shot was all of 12 yards away. Right after the second shot I hear a grunt and sure enough a buck is comming up the same trail. I whisper to the girls a buck is comming. This buck stops right behind the doethen walks between her andus putting him at litterally 5 yards away from me and my girls. Its a basket rack 8 prolly going 200 lbs. My girls have a death grip on my legs and this buck isn't moving. I peek down at each girl and I tell you I have never seen eyes so big. This bucks wondering why this doe isn't moving along. Well after atleast a couple minutesof terrifying torture on the girls I let out a holler and that buck jumped over the moon. A once in a lifetime expierence we will never forget. I'm gutting this doe and in a moment that would make any red neck daddy proud my youngest ask "Daddy, when your done can we go to Mcdonalds?":D:DThats my girl right there.

First year bowhunting, I was walking to my treestand and just happened to look to my left and seen a forkie making a rub about 30 yds away. I shot, I missed. Still it was a great experience.

I've done it several times. A couple times with my 7 year old son with me. We've backed up into thickets at trail heads, food plots, etc and just waited. I will say I've only taken does doing this, but what a rush.

In 2001 I was not having a great season. It was Nov 14th last day before gun season. The Farmer left about 15 row of corn in. It was really windy. I saw a deer coming across the field. I got down and hauled arse behind the corn to cut him off. It was perfect, he step out and i wacked him. Only deer from the ground for me.

I've taken two from the ground with no blind. Both were hunting pastures with small drainages in them.
The second was a seven point buck that I rattled in several times before legal shooting hours. Everytime he started to leave, I'd hit the horns and he'd circle back. I was finally able to get a shot at 34 yards. I try to hunt a couple times a year from the ground just to change things up. It seems like deer look up alot more these days, lol!

I've taken a few from the ground and occasionally will hunt from the ground depending on the circumstances. My favorite hunt was on the ground in a riverbottom........ I killed a 7 pt. buck while rattling, scraping, grunting(the whole 9 yards) while staying low behind a dead fallen down tree, surrounded by 7 ft. tall weeds. The wind was perfectly from the west, the buck came in looking for a fight, I stayed as low to the ground as possible, raised my bow off the ground, and shot him through the heart at 12 yards. Best hunt I ever had.

Below are my two best bucks, both taken from the ground (unintentionally I might add). Lots of luck and the circumstances were unbelievable. The first pic was a buck taken with my LocOn Spirit stand on my back......to make a long story short I had to stretch out from behind a water oak to take the shot. He was 8 paces from me and directly facing me when I shot him through the chest with his head raised(only time I've ever taken a frontal shot).

2nd pic is my best buck taken while hiding in some thin brush at 25 yards.

Wrong pics.:(

My buck from last year was shot from the ground with no blind, that was pretty much pure luck though. I got out of my stand to head home for lunch and I had to take a leek. As I was watering the ground he came in behind me and headed towards my left. When he passed by I grabbed my gear and was getting ready to back out when I noticed that he is now less than 20 yards behind me. Long story short, he got to 13 yards broadside, I let my arrow fly, and a double lung shot with my Rocky Mt Snyper had the buck piled up within 50 yards.

Last year I took a buck off the ground @ 12ydsI was sitting under a fallen tree had numerous bucks around down wind and never got busted. This year I had a chance at a doe about 5yds I could have taken her I was sitting back about 9 rows in the corn she was about 3 rows into the corn. That same night a fork walked by on the outside edge of the field. I was soo pumped when I got that buck last year its almost a different feeling being that close and eye level with them.
