Elephant taken with Bow
I just returned from Zimbabwe where I harvested a 6 ton bull elephant with my bow. It was an adreniline rush. I was charged by a elephant, rhino and chased by a croc on this trip, what more could a guy ask for. I shot my bull at only 15 yards, I had bulls as close as 10 yards (that was a charge, that all most made me wet my pants) I'd be glad to share the particulars with anyone interested, such as bow wt., kinetic energy, arrow wt, etc...

Congrats man. Can you put up a picture?
I only hunt what I'll eat, but if I ever did go after an elephant I think I'd be too afraid of their government to head to Zimbabwe lol...too much CNN prolly but dunno. :D Also, did you get anything else while there? Pics with a story would be great. =) Thanks, Dave |
RE: Elephant taken with Bow

RE: Elephant taken with Bow
My BowTech Tribute bow was setat 100#, and I was using 125 grain InnerLoc Broadheads. My total arrow wt. was 750 grains, they were double stacked Easton arrows. I had to use a the original Knotless loop because all other string loops were braking under thewt. I also used a Scot "Shark" Release it was rated for the 100# pull.
Any other questions??? |
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
I shot the bull on the last day of my hunt and at the last hour. My arrow was placed good, but the bull was still standing in thick brush when we tracked him down. So literally at the last hour of the day, I had to finish the bull with a .416. The bull was dying but I did not have the time to wait and I did not want him to suffer so I feel it was the right decision mad.
I'm not going to lie about it, hunting an elephant with a bow is tricky and risky. You have a 50% chance of hitting ribs, in which you will NOT go thru. Then there lungs are so huge that a low lung shot will still allow the elephant to run for hours, which is not what we as bow hunter want to do. |
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
A friend of mine is headed there soon if not already. He's shooting a 90 Hoyt and made an arrow consisting of 3 different arrows that all slide into one another to make up the weight.
Me personally I have zero desire to shoot an elephant but to each their own. Too many North American animals I haven't taken yet. |

How come you weren't holding the head up in the pic?;)Pretty impressive bud, no desire to shoot an elephant, but that is one heck of a feat nonetheless.

RE: Elephant taken with Bow
That is unbelievable, congratulations. I'll bet that wasn't an easy drag. lol

RE: Elephant taken with Bow
I think that all the meat goes to the local village.
|
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
Awesome! That is something I plan on doing. So, how deeply did you sink the arrow? Was it a good double lunger or what? Details please?
Rob....I said that about Africa ten years ago...too many critters in my own backyard to hunt, right. Now, I would go to Africa every year if feasible! It is an amazing place!. It should not be overlooked my friend! |
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
I know Will but with an Bull Elk, Black Bear, Whitetail, Coyote Rio Gobbler and Eastern Gobbler under my bowhunting belt, I want a Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Caribou, Moose and more, long before I head to Africa....it's going to be a long road.;)

RE: Elephant taken with Bow
Well the owner of my company is in Africa right now, can you cook elephant?
|
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
You don't get to bring any meat home Germ. It all goes to the tribes etc...the only thing that comes to the states is the hide.
|
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
I second this comment , IMO it just seems wrong . Each to their own .

RE: Elephant taken with Bow
6 tons, wow. That says a lot about the QEM in Zimbabwe;)
|
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
Slippery slope guys. The more people who say why would anyone want to shoot animal "X" the more chance that those who do want to shoot animal "X" may never get that chance. Then it's on down the line to animals "Y" & "Z" etc.
From whatI understand, hunting some of those critters over there is the best way to protect them from being wiped out, because of the money they bring in. |
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
Congrats on your accomplishsment.
While it's quite a feat with a bow, I don't think that's something I personally would want to do. I just think the odds of killing an elephant quickly and humanely with one shot from an arrow are too low for my comfort level. But that's a personal choice that should be up to the individual hunter, not others. Congrats again! |

SWEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Elephant taken with Bow
Cool pics and story..awesome bow and arrow combo..post some more pics..what else did ya hunt?
|
RE: Elephant taken with Bow
Congrats on a trophy of a lifetime. I have to agree with Ryan on this, i dont know the details about it, but from what i understand, animals like this, if they werent hunted by a few trophy hunters every year, the money that they generate wouldnt allow governments and outfitters to keep poaching down, thus protecting them. Great work again.
