What's your "record"
Whats your "record" for sits without having a deer in bow range?
In '06 it was 4, for me. Other than that....2 was the most. So far in '07.....I've gone 2 sits in one stretch......3 sits in 2 more stretches.....and I've gone the last 4 sits without having one in range. How is it where you hunt? |
RE: What's your "record"
This morning I broke a streak of 3 sits with no sightings. That is the most I can recall for some time.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Maybe 3 times in the last 3 years
|
RE: What's your "record"
17 hunts
|
RE: What's your "record"
You know it's gonna get better, though, buck.;)
I've seen 15 deer (8 and 7, respectively, in the snd and 3rd sits).....but had none of them in range (for the record....I'd bet 7 of them were the same deer). |
RE: What's your "record"
Yeah last night I broke my streak of 2 days with no sightings (4 sits)..made up for it with 3 bucks.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Haha, last archery season on gamelands. That would be30 days, not sure how many sits. Got a shot the first day then shot my buck on Halloween. Then shot another doe after that.
|
RE: What's your "record"
WOW, DC......I can't imagine that. Only hunting (deer) I've ever done is where I hunt, now.....but I can't imagine being that patient. Kudos....and I hope it ended on a good note!
|
RE: What's your "record"
oh man I have never kept track but its got to be in the 20+ range.. during early archery season..I had two little bucks under my stands this month thats it.. Never saw one doe near a stand until just the other day...
If I wanted to have deer pass by everyday I sure wouldnt be hunting specific bucks and my stands would be placed in completely different locations for early and late seasons.. during the rut, I see deer almost daily since my stand are set up on the doe family routes. Late season I have deer walking by almost every day if I get over a foot of snow.... The snow levels really help congregate them during Dec. |
RE: What's your "record"
I would definately have to say over 20 sits many times.
|
RE: What's your "record"
I've gone entire seasons in Vermont when I was younger without seeing a deer, much less one in bow range. That's what happens in the big woods sometimes.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Last year was horriable.................32 morning and evening hunts in a row.
Needless to say on the 33rd i shot the first doe that walked by. |
RE: What's your "record"
1 hr
|
RE: What's your "record"
4 sits, no deer...
|
RE: What's your "record"
Guys I'm not complaining at all. I know I'm lucky....but it comes at a price (buck:Doe ratio). I won't apologize for having a good place to hunt, though!;)
|
RE: What's your "record"
We have it pretty good here in Illinois. I rarely sit in a stand without having at least a few deer in range sometime during the hunt. They are usually does, fawns, and small bucks, but they are deer and they are in range. Having said that, my first hunt of the year (yesterday a.m.) resulted in no deer in range. I saw six does and one buck, but the closest any of them got was 75 yds.
|
RE: What's your "record"
I honestly don't remember the last time that I was out without seeing a single deer, first day this year I saw over a dozen, probablly closer to 20, Monday I saw 3 in the morning at a new spot and over a dozen in the evening, yesterday morning I saw 2 and yesterday evening was another 3 along with 38 turkey ;)
|
RE: What's your "record"
Wow i dont know what i would do, some of you guys are really patient. in eight years of bowhunting....about16 times i think. A two/year average is about right looking back, and those sits result most of the time from 'busted' hunts....by coyotes, people, etc. That is not counting last year, i always had 40+ sits in a year before I filled my tags.
|
RE: What's your "record"
I've had years that I've only seen 6-7 deer in a1 1/2 month season.Last year was a good year I saw at least 1 deer every sit. Year before I only saw 17 deer all year. Hopefully this year will be a good one.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Ive never kept track neither, but if i was to guess i'd have to say at least 10 sits. it just depends on where i decide togo hunt. If i hunt near town deernumbers are higher,or if i go out to the big woods, sightings can be alot lower there.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Heck I’ve already gone 8 sits this year so far depending on how you want to count it. I had deer in range the one night but it was too dark. Of course I wasn’t hunting any of my primary spots and my range was only 15 yds.
Back when I first started I had gone an entire season without getting a shot….That only happened once though. |
RE: What's your "record"
Well, I've never kept track, but I'm positive that I've sat in a stand, 20 times in a row, several times, and not even seen deer, much less of them in bow range. I seen 11 deer last year all of last season (with 5 being one morning) and thats from September to January!
So far this season, I have had a doe under my stand opening morning that busted me, so now, so far this season, it has been 5 sits without seeing another deer. My dream is to have a place to hunt that I can consistently see deer...one day. |
RE: What's your "record"
Late season can be rough. Either I see a bunch or none. 20+ is my record. I stopped counting b/c it was too discouraging. That has been very rare though.
|
RE: What's your "record"
So far this year I've been out a total of 6 times the first 3 times I didn't see a deer but they were only short sit's the next 2 times out I saw 3 bucks one time (one of which I shot)and 2 bucks the next and the last time out I went to an old spot I used to hunt alot and didn't see one deer while in stand but I did get to listen to a girls high school soccer game and I saw a hiker with her dog and 2 four wheelers.......I'm not going back to that spot until I can hunt it in the morning or there's a bunch or snow on the ground.
|
RE: What's your "record"
I have a new record. Last night.....I bumped a little buck and a doe getting to stand......and then saw nothing. 5 in a row with nothing in bow range.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Where I hunt, I a typical2.5 month season goes like this:
20-25"sits" morning or evening 5-10 deer seen per season 2-4 in bow range per season. Last year, I saw one buck all season long, and I shot him. It was a 1.5 year old 7 point. I see a deer every 3 to 4 hunts on average. I'd say every 8 to 10 hunts I get a deer in bow range. That being said, I've managed to take 5 whitetails in the last three years with my bow under these conditions. You pretty much have to take advantage of every shot opportunity you get, regardless of age or sex of the deer. It's tough hunting, but I get "buck fever" every time I see a deer, even if it's a fawn because it just doesn't happen that much. The funny thing is when I went to Illinois, and I expected to see lots of deer, I didn't get nearly as excited seeing them because that's what I expected. So there's a good side to not seeing alot of deer. You get more excitement out of the encounters that you do have. |
RE: What's your "record"
Never mind in range. I have gone 10-12 sits without seeing a deer.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Last year I went 9 sits without one, seeing deer, just out a good ways.
|
RE: What's your "record"
I went 2.5 seasons without seeing a deer when I started hunting. I almost quit. First deer I saw I couldn't shoot because I didn't have a doe tag. But I was hooked.
BTW - I was even hunting in multi-spots in multiple states. Tom |
RE: What's your "record"
Going back to 1998 - in 1998 I went 17 sits w/o having a deer in range
2000 I went 15 sits 2005 I went 10 sits THis is hunting the same county where Matt & Frank just raised the ante!;) |
RE: What's your "record"
Back in the early days when deer weren't as plentiful in central Illinois, I once went an entire season without seeing a deer from my stand. This would have been about 1982, and I imagine I probably sat something like 50+ times over 3 months.
|
RE: What's your "record"
Gotta be at least 15 sits without seeing a deer. Tough to stay motivated when it's 4AM and colder out than my wifes heart. Really envious of you guys who see deer everytime. Sure must keep you alert..
|
RE: What's your "record"
In i991, I went 12 days in a row without seeing a deer, then I saw this....

RE: What's your "record"

|

RE: What's your "record"
You know i think this is a great topic, and in return some hunters feel "required" to take a Non-Mature buck. Here in texas, some of my spots I see does, then nothing. Next I might see a Buck way off as I walk out of my stand at night: but usually the month of October at least the 1st half is REALLY slow! I've has 20+ days looking at the same leafs and racoons, that I really have to calm myself down when a young buck finally walks my way and wait a couple of years for him to grow! But that why they call it hunting not shooting.
