Very nice of the son to be thinking of you.I am sure he has been pretty occupied with whats going on with his mother.I would just make sure I showed my appreciation for his courtesy to him.

Thats good news, but you are lucky. I've had very little success is securing permission unless I was talking to someone face to face.
