RE: Mature deer and stand Avoidance
Good article and a good topic.Keeping stands fresh is always a consideration for me.It depends on what the herd is accustomed to in the area you are hunting, how frequently are they encountering the sights and sounds and smell of humans.Entrance and exit strategies and scent control are all huge considerations. If your sightings are not dropping off continue to hunt it,if they are give the stand sufficient rest or move it.

RE: Mature deer and stand Avoidance
The article sounds good and all but I don't completely buy it. What if that old buck doesn't come around that stand everyday? You hunt it once and then decide to move? More than likely theres a reason why I chose the stand I did, deer sign/sightings, etc. I'm gonna wait it out until something happens. Its all about being in the right place at the right time IMO.

RE: Mature deer and stand Avoidance
If this stand usage thing is correct, how do you account for shooting houses ?
I am not throwing rocks, but I have been in shooting houses that have been there for YEARS. I believe that deer become AWARE that humans hang out in certain trees in the woods. I think they check these trees, BUT don't really avoid these areas for any significant amount of time. Interesting theory |
