I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

I'm out of my mind. I just can't not go. Kurt (Q2INWHITETAILS) is coming up tomorrow morn. He's going to help me hang another stand around noon when the deer should be down. We'll hang it in my Pin Oak where I killed my buck last year and watched a 20 some in 10 point years past. It's got major branches to the ground and with some new climbing sticks I should be able to use my arms, left knee and good leg. I can put some weight on my cast, not all of it but some so....wish me luck, I know I'm nuts to try but I have to. I'll take pictures on Saturday regardless. Worst case, I can actually hunt from the ground under that tree if the wind is right. [&:]

Yeah, you're nuts alright.....But I understand.....sometimes a guy just HAS to get out, it's that simple.

I haven't seen him around here for a while I don't think....Does he still lurk?

Now thats dedication. Just dont overdue it and makes things worse... Maybe you should throw up a ground blind while your there...

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

I believe I would make a natural ground blind. You don't won't to re injure your leg and set yourself back even more.

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

You'll know once you start climbing if it's too much. Don't push yourself too hard. I can totally relate though. In high school I broke my leg playing football, so my dad put up a ladder stand for me, really close to camp. Being the hard-head that I am, I hiked up the mountain on my crutches to my old stand, and my little brother took the stand close to camp. He was back in camp at 0730 hrs with a 140 class 10 pt[:@]

now Rob, you had that cast in the summer heat for a good couple weeks now. that thing has gotta be stinkin....fill me in on your scent control...im curious:D ;)

i knew you would try to find a way out. i really want pics of you in stand with a cast on:D

best of luck....take er easy....if you cant get in a tree sit on a stump! you can atleast sit there and watch helplessly! lol.

man id love to see you climb a tree with a cast on your leg....have Kurt take pics of that too :D

dont you own atleast 1 climber?? a sit and climb really wouldnt be all to bad for ya i dont think?? i just cant imagine climbing sticks with a cast....man you really are nuts...

where theres a will theres a way

put some carpet or something on the bottom of the cast...its gunna sound real nice clanking on a metal stand:D...better yet...super glue a big homeade rubber sole to it:D ;)

man i can see the look on your drs face when you show up with a big ole homeade rubber sole glued to your cast..."i didnt want it to make noise on my treestand!"

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

Before I had knee surgery I could not walk much more than 100 yards let alone climb a tree. To get out in the woods I used my arms to get up the ladder. It can be done and good luck. PS ever try dragging a deer out of the woods with only one good leg....it takes a while...hope you get to find out. Good luck.

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

LOL thanks guys. I've been mulling this over in my mind, picture how and what I need to do and I've formulated a plan. For about two weeks now I've been climbing up and down a step ladder. What I do is place my left knee on a rung, step up with my right and repeat the process. I wish I had a ladder stand but I don't. I do however have the ladder sticks with rungs on both sides of the stick. That's what we'll put in the Pin Oak. I have a strong upper body and know I can pull using mostly my arms and good right leg. Like ultra said, I'll know when I try. I'll try tomorrow when we hang it. I'll know for sure then and just carry my blind, pop it up and hunt on the ground as much as I don't want to. There's no great spot for the blind or I would have had it out weeks ago. I kinda know what I can and cannot get away with, with this left leg. The cast keeps it all nice and sturdy.

mauser, I have a pair of crotcheted thick socks I'm wearing over my cast....I will however take pictures. Won't be any of me climbing as it'll be dark. The scent control is the other issue. I'm going to have to rely on Scent Killer. I already realized today that I'll have to spray down my crutches too. This is going to be interested but I'll give a full report on Sunday....LOL I can't hunt Saturday evening, my wife inadvertantly planned a party at our house Saturday night.....she didn't think Sept was archery season...well now she knows!.

I wanted to hunt my other stand but I'll put Kurt in that stand. It has the ladder sticks with the rungs staggered up the pole in the middle. I can't do the knee thing with that one.

The cast comes off Wednesday. [&:]

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

lol....funny we think on the same track...scent control and covering the cast:D

but, i know if i were in your cast, id be schemin up somethin much of the same...heck, i rifle hunted right after getting out of bed after having a BAD case of mono. the first time i left the house was the Sunday before the opener...to make sure my rifle was shootin true. i asked the Dr if the recoil could rupture my spleen...he said no way! i still say he doesnt realize what kinda recoil i was talking about...dont know how i made it, but i put in a full day that first day. guess i wasnt really awake lol...but i was out there. stayed with a group that kept me close to the truck and kept a close eye on me...but i was out there lol.

good luck Rob...im rootin for ya!! a bruiser, cast and all...that would be somethin!

I know, wouldn't it be something to have a buck, bow across it's chest, crutches across it's belly and me smiling brightly behind it...too funny.[8D]

Don't push yourself too hard Rob. Best of luck and please make sure you are strapped in. I don't know if you have one local to you, but D1ck's has really nice ladder stands on sale right now for $49. I have 2 of them at my place and they work great. Just a thought........

Rob/PA Bowyer 09-27-2007 09:07 PM

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

Thanks Matt, maybe I'll look tomorrow. The ladder sticks I have virtually are like the ladder stand...I just need a place to put my left knee.

I will be strapped in. I require that with anyone who hunts with me. I'm not afraid of death for myself but I do for my wife and I am really scared of being paralyzed. I know what my poor wife has to go through with just my injury. I wouldn't want to burden her or anyone with more. Safety is Number ONE

Yup, I gotta say you've lost your mind. I don't think I would risk climbin a tree in your shape. I would be on the ground so I didn;'t mess myself up more. Nonetheless good luck on Saturday. I keep my fingers crossed that I don't end up like the rest of you gimps before I tag out. Only 2 more days....not even that, but you get the picture

Rob you're nuts. Really. You still on pain killers? cuz I don't think you're thinking straight.

In all seriousness I'm afraid I'd be the same way. I'm having 3 surgeries in the next 3 months and I'm thinking about any which way I can hunt during that time. I even scheduled elbow surgery for the week of xmas. It may goof up xmas, but it will cut down on the impact to deer season. We're all a bit nuts when it comes to bowhunting.

Good luck though and be safe!!!!!!!

Yep, your not thinking right. Like I told GR8 the other day, I have a friend that has had that operation twice. Doc told him after the second operation if he tore it again he was looking at being a permanent crip. Dont over do it !

I hear ya guys and believe me I'm soaking it in. I'll know tomorrow if I can get up the tree or not. I do know one thing, I won't be putting pressure on my Achillies...so...I'm still thinking I can do it. I've got to try, I know me.;)

Whatever you decide, good luck man.

Yeah good luck..get out while ya can.. I limped hard yesterday and almost reached for the crutches this morning just to get to work..Dunno why but the serious disabling heel pain is back..must have over-done it somewhere along the line although nothing stands out in my mind.

Tomorrow is, what it is, we'll see what happens..

Yep, your not thinking right. Like I told GR8 the other day, I have a friend that has had that operation twice.
I agree. One of my best friends played basketball where we went to college.....and tore his in a pickup game at the age of 23. He was in excellent physical shape....and it happened. The second time he tore it....(both complet etears)....he had been out of a cast for about 1 year. He was playing golf.....looking for a ball in the rough....and stepped on it, wrong....complete tear, again.

Nobody can tell you what to do. Just understand your choice has potential consequences (ESPECIALLY the "choice" to climb).

Good luck to you and Kurt.

If you decide to go out, best of luck to you.

I know nobody could stop me going out with a broken leg and full length cast with crutches in the snow when I had to. Of course I was only 18 then. Would probably think twice now.;)

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

Sounds like a good tree for a ground blind. I'd just make a nest down at the base of the tree and forget trying to climb. Doing the one legged hop up into a treestand just doesn't sound like a sensible plan to me. I'd hate for you to miss a step, hit the ground like a gob of mud and not be around any more.

RE: I'm crazy, I think I can make it out.

Where there's a will there's a way. I broke my leg in half one late summer. The doc said no way I would be bow hunting come Oct. 1. He was wrong. I got a spike on opening day out of a ground blind I had made. The next day I shot one of the largest bucks I have ever killed from another natural ground blind I had made. He was a nice 9 point. It took me over2 hours to get him out, piece by piece. I was still using one crutch at the time and couldn't put any weight on my left leg. Needless to say that was a long painful but exciting morning. You are not crazy for going out, you are dedicated like most of us on this site are. BTW, the morning I killed the 9 point I started the morning off in a ladder stand and almost fell off. I didn't try to climb a stand again until my leg healed a little more. Just be careful and don't get in a hurry.
