How Still do you Sit!

I just want to see how everyone else is in stand....my buddy and I were talking yesterday how it is hard to sit still for 4 hours and not move, especially when you are not seeing any deer.

I stand up and stretch...scratch....sometimes even grab a water bottle out of my bag for a sip. Maybe this is why I am not seeing any deer!

Do you guys never move...even if you cant feel your a$$?

Thanks
Jim

I Stand to stretch about every two hours. Otherwise....I sit it out. I don't handle my bow....I don't rummage through my pockets/pack. I "try" not toe move unnecessarily. I know I could do better.....but I am conscious of it.

It is good to stay stretched. If you sit for long periods ,especially in the cold, then try and standor draw your bow, the muscles will be stiff and tight. You will not be able to make a good shot. I have heard of some people even being unable to draw their bow back.

I like to alternate, I sit for an hour, stand for about 15 minutes or so and then sit again. Inbetween sits and stands I draw my bow back once in a while to keep my muscles warm, although this year hasnt been a problem as its been in the 80's all season except for opening mornign when it was 26 deg.

I'm like Wis Bow Huntr... I alternate standing and sitting. I also do isometric exercises. It requires no movement to speak of and keeps you loose. If I'm sitting I just put my hands under the seat and pull up, then I'll push in, then grab the seat and pull out... just put tension on the muscles and hold it for a few seconds. No movement required. You can do the same thing with your legs.. push feet together and hold, cross them and pull out and hold. Put your palms together and push, overlap your fingers of one hand with the other and pull. It really does keep the body fresh. Best of all, minimal movement required. It makes drawing that bow a snap when the time comes.

I stand most of the time and take an occasional sit break. An hour standing up and then 15-30 minutes sitting. Like Davidmil, I also do isometrics. Less movement and they work well to keep things loose. I prefer to shoot while standing and there will be less movement when something is coming in.

Depends on your set-up. If you can see a long way off they cansee you and you need to be still most of the time. If you're in thick brushy woods and can see at best 30yds, you can afford to move around a little(quietly) since they can't see you either

Me and my bro' have talked about this before because he's always giving me a hard time for not setting perfectly still while I'm in the stand. I can only make it about 1 hour before Ihave to stand a stretch and he set's the whole time that he's on stand.

I sit pretty darn still, will stretch about every couple hours.. I take that time to use the bathroom bottle or take a drink...

I sit for a hour and stand20-30 minutes or so. I also draw my bow back every once in a while.

I stand for the first hour of daylight and last hour before sunset. I sit the rest of the time with the occasional stretch, drink break, ect. Not to much movement in the blind though.

I move a bit to to stay stretched. If I am sitting all day I will climb down and stretch for a min then climb back up. I always take my bow though....

i also take "standing breaks". but ive found that the only reason i get "antsy" to move around is because my mind isnt being active. so i take a small book, a new testament (the cover is actually green too) and a game boy micro (i know i know....boo!) but hey it keeps my mind active, and me still, and thats all that matters!

I sit as long as I can, but usually take quite a few stand breaks.

I usually do 45 min standing, 15 sitting in the morning and evening, but in the afternoon I switch to more sitting than standing. that is mostly because i would rather shoot standing than sitting.

i am incredibly fidgity in stand, but i make a concious effort to be as still as possible. if i have to move, i make it very slow and keep everything close to my body.

That's a good point, and it's one that I use. I don't move that much, but when I do, I move slowly.

I sit so still you'd swear I was sleeping. Now if only I could control my snoring I might have something come in close.

I hate standing in my climber, I don't know why, just do. I always adjust between sitting straight up or leaning back in my stand to cope with the buttache. That is usually the only time I'm really moving, other than my slowly turning my head...

MOmightymite 09-24-2007 02:20 PM

RE: How Still do you Sit!

I dont move a muscle the whole time on stand. I try not to even breath as they may catch my movement...lol j/k I do try to stay as still as possible tho. I move to get calls out and stand to stretch my legs every hour or two, but for the most part i keep my movements to just glassing with my binocs. It appears to work for me because i have had squirrels, climb within feet of me, and birds land on my arrows, and one time i had an owl land about 4 feet away.

I alternate sitting to standing, just not very frequently. The isometrics like davidmil described are also great for fighting off getting cold.

I used to move very little if stand hunting. Then one cold morning I was going to attempt taking a doe, but my poundage mysteriously got set to like 300lbs... After two ugly attempts, she left... After moving around for a few minutes my poundage was back down to 70#. Crazy?...

OGW 09-24-2007 02:39 PM

RE: How Still do you Sit!

I sit for about an hour, look around then stand for about 10 minutes, then sit for another hour.
The last hour I stand and try to move my eyes first then slowly only my head to look.
I dont have to look at my watch by digging under the clothes covering my wrist...it's on a velcro watchband thats strapped to my bow's riser.
If I drink anything it's during those periods when I'm standing.

I try to stay very still when standing but I put camo blinds around my two man ladderstands this year and feel it gives me more room to move any part of my body below by shoulders when sitting.

I very rarely sit while in a stand. (after all, they're called stands, not sits.... heh heh)

On the other hand, I usually only hunt for a max of four hours at a time.
