David:

Another point I DIDN'T reference is.....I don't get down right away (right after the shot). I wait (ALWAYS, now) 30 minutes, unless I see it go down. That's a lot of time for a well-hit animal to bleed. I have waited 2 hours to get down. Most times it's 1 hour.
You all know how many deer I've shot. Honestly, I've never waited an hour or a half hour for that matter. I gather my self from the rush. Climb down quietly and go to the arrow. If I'm closes to the truck I take my climber and maybe a layer of clothes to the truck. If I'm far from the truck I pack up my climber and lay it against the tree. Then I go find my deer. I have backed out for 3 or 4 hours on a couple occasions when I didn't like the sign I saw, but usually I just go get find the deer. No critter double lunged is going to be awake when I get there. My hearing is almost non existant(compliments of mortars and a couple VC mines) I can NOT hear a deer run through a foot of oak leaves at 30 yards let along fall 60 or 70 yards away. The old crash deal doesn't work for me. I use my feet, eyes and all the available daylight I have.
