Does the moon phase affect your hunting?
 

Does it change how when or where you hunt?

I've got a moon phase guide and as an example on the 30th of September it tells me that the "Excellent" time to hunt is between 2:54 and 4:54 in the morning.:eek:

No not really..."Work Phase" and "Family Phase" have enough influence on me, that if I have a window to hunt...I'm going.

I planned my trip to MO for my based on the moon phase. More specifically, I planned it so I wouldn't be hunting during the full moon. I don't know how much it matters, but I never have much luck during a full moon.

full moon hunting usually gets the deer moving in the middle of the day here, like between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm

Maybe have seen some relationship between the moon phases and observe day movment. I use the guide to plan trips but that is more for ruttung times rather than deer activity. I think the basic principal has somethig to do with a deers "cycle". It follows a 28 day cycle like the moon and tends to be acompanied by the same moon phase at the same time of year. I think...

Some "experts" say it doesn't matter. Some "experts" say it does.

I think it does. Hunt early and late on full moons from feeding to bedding and bedding to feeding. Hunt around noon too, as most deer get up and wander for awhile then.

That's what I think. Take it or leave it.

from what ive read:
1st qtr moon (right half illum.)- your prefered hunt would be in the moning (from food to bed) because the moon usually doesnt rise until late at night giving the deer time to laze around in the evening before heading out to eat.

full moon - ive been told hunt all day, cause it just makes em crazy, and something to do with up all night, sleep, up in mid day, sleep, up all night.

last qtr moon (left half illum.)- the prefered hunt would be in the evening (bed to food) because the moon usually rises before the sun sets meaning they have to get up and out to the field to feed before it gets dark (sun and moon)

and new moon (no moon)- ive been told to hunt all day because since they cant see as well at night theyll be up and moving during the day

like i said this is just what ive read.

Seriously, Moon phase does have a lot of "Influence" on how deer move.
All things being equal, for instance, weather perfectly clear but moon full at night, deer will be out on the fields eating. Moon full during the middle of the daymeans dark at night. Less activity on the fields and movement more in the day. But now throw in weather! Rain at night, deerfeed during day. Rain during day, deerfeed at night. Bottom line: Hunt a full moon during the day when clear. Hunt right after a rain anytime.

I keep a log and I definately see more deer during a new moon. As for the "best times" as to time during the day, I dont believe them. Hunt mornings and evenings.

I have only been bow hunting for 6 years, and ive never had any luck early in the morning or late in the afternoon when their is a full moon. Some say that when there is a full moon there is more light at night and the deer feed all night. Dont know how true that is but ive never had any luck hunting on a full moon. Of course i have never sat all day either, some say that the best time to hunt a full moon is at 12 o'clock in the afternoon.

While I have had success during all moon phases, the full moon is the worst time for me.(in terms of seeing #s of deer)
