I like the Early AM, the Earlier the better. imo. I like to get into my treestand WAY WAY WAY before light, bungee strap myself against the tree set my cell phone alarm for vibrate, check my saftey harness, and fall asleep.
Then by the time i wake up its still not light out and i am all ready to go and everything has had a good chance to settle down before anything happens.

I voted sunrise because there is nothing quite like being 20 feet up on a fall morningand watching the world come awake. The smell of the leaves... a touch of frost... the first glimmer of sunlight...nothing like it. This morning it was 38 at the house. Now all I need is for the next 10 days to pass. I took a long walk around the woods and into the swamp this morning. Started right out the back door. About 3 hours of sneaking and peeking on the wet ground. I circled and zigged through the whole woods behind the house, mostly near the edges until I cut through the swamp to come home. I walked up on 2 groups of deer, 3 in one and 4 in the other. They never spooked. I walked right on by. I had 3 does at 30 yards broadside. The second group at 40. They just watched and never moved. I walked on by. If only I'd had my bow.
A sneaked out to a field and caught another 5 feeding at about 80 yards. I jumped 2 nice bucks bedded together inthecedar/hemlockswamp. They didn't hang around. I was being so quite and stumbled over one of those hemlock bogs and snapped a limb trying to keep my balance. They exploded from about 40 yards and never looked back. One was the big 8 point I've been seeing. I was one tired puppy when I got back to the house. I saw 14 deer in their domain but I covered a lot of ground and drank 2 bottles of water. I love early morning.

Good thoughts Rob on anticipation,
If I had to pick one time of day for hunting it would be the last hour of daylight for the
following reasons:
(1) more deer sightings.
(2) increased animal activity (racoons, bobcats, etc.) Where I hunt we have a lot of wooducks
that roost and I love watching/hearing them come in and make a racket.
(3) I like how as it gets dark and very quiet and your visibility gets limited and starts playing tricks
on you, you start keying in on all the noises around you and relying more on your sense of sound.

I said 10 to 1 but it is more like 10 to 3. The reason I say this is b/c I hunt publicland were there are many other hunters. Most hunters don't stay in the woods all day and when they leave or come in the deer stir a little.
