Rub size and Mature Large Racked (P&Y 125"+) Bucks??
#2
I would say that rubs on trees 6 inches or bigger usually indicates a large racked buck. A better way to tell is on groups of smaller trees bunched together. If the front is rubbed and there are marks on the back trees you can bet that the buck that did thathas an impressive rack. Also, if rubs are higher up on trees (4 feet plus) a big buck probably made that rub. All of these are indicators of rack size though. You really can't tell if a buck is mature or not from a rub.

just for comparisions sake, i watch a SMALL buck tear this tree up in about a minute. i didnt even count points...first day or last day, he got a free pass even if legal. just a tiny scrub buck.

before, i would said that was probably a decint buck that made that...not the BIGGEST rub...but a good 3ft high and 3-4" thick tree. that rub wasnt there at all till he came by that morning.
i often wonder if you can tell much by rubs. i see small trees trashed...big trees rubbed bare...tall ones, low ones..id love to learn more and will be watching this thread...

I would think so.. Especially from where I live.. That is usually a Shooter.. 120 class or better.. At least from My experience.. Although, I know that saying that, You really never know what made it.. Could be a Mature Buck, 4 1/2 yr old, with a small rack..

I've always gone along the guidelines of looking at the trees BESIDE the rub if there are any. If they are scraped up to, it can be a fairly reliable indication of the width of the rack.

I don't think the size of the tree isa trueindicator! I've seen a spiker rub the heck out of a telephone pole!! I think you can judge better by the hieght of the rub than the size of the tree!!!

I also look for tine marks up high, if any trees are scarrred up on the back side of the rub or to the sides, those things can give you a bit of an indicator.
