I have heard more and more lately that hunting the last couple days in October, up until about the 10th of November are some of the best times to hunt as the bucks are moving more and more getting ready to find their does for the RUT...
But I wouldn't limit my time just to that time frame. The more you are out in the field. The better chance of getting that deer you want right?
So I guess, confidence in your equipment would be #1, getting out as much as possible being the second most important thing. Also, don't try to live up to someone elses expectations on a "trophy buck" take the deer that is gonna make you happy and stick out in your mind for years.
