It isn't legal here, if it was I don't see where it's any different than hunting over a food plot or the food scented lures which are legal here.

In my state (Indiana) baiting is illegal, but the regs are real blurry. It all boils down to what the local CO calls "bait", and if the judge agrees.

It's okay to hunt over food plots, accidental grain spills, harvested fields,etc. but if the CO says it's bait then it's bait. Another example would be mineral blocks.....how faraway doyou have to be, to not be hunting over mineral?

I will say that 99% of our CO's are real common sense individuals, but italways get down to interpretation.

I guess I hadn't drilled down far enough on these boards to see that this was a relatively "over-exposed" topic.

Why did I ask? -- I've gun hunted for a long time - though never much outside of Virginia (some on military bases around the county). For me, the only experience I had with people hunting over bait was with poachers putting out corn piles and mineral licks on our property. Baiting has been illegal in my county as long as I can remember, so - I guess due to my ignorance, I was surprised to find here that baiting is legal in many states and that a lot of people hunt over bait. My opinion (like everyone else's) was shaped primarily by my experience, and I guess I was starting to see that hunting over bait may not be the "evil" thing that I always thought it was growing up.

A lot of folks take a "live and let live" attitude, while others take a "holier / purer than thou" attitude... whether it's gun hunting vs bow hunting, hunting over a pile of corn, a food plot, a soybean field, or a Moultrie feeder vs. sitting in the middle of the woods hoping something walks by.

I asked because I was seeking other folks' perspectives in an effort to broaden my mind a bit. I definitely wasn't looking to start a fracas...

... though the only response I have an issue with so far is the hunter who says he does it sometimes anyway even though it's illegal.
