I would say wolf, because it seems like its got a big shoulder mass, maybe used for bringing down larger prey. Or maybe its a dog that got caught in mid-stride and it just seems that way. Would kinda have to know if you have neighbors, or whats around that land, to know if its a dog. Wouldn't doubt it if it actually was a dog, but whatever. I voted wolf. Kinda cool you had one of them wander past your cam.

The only thing that I am certain of is that it is not a coyote.I have seen two wolves in the wild and in both instances it was in late fall they had winter coats.I got a very good look at one and it was easily 150 pounds.I have seen coyotes that have been 55 to 65 pounds and they were very big for their species, this animal looks considerably larger.

You got that right! I shot a 43lb female this year and she was BIG!

I agree....it's not a coyote, judging by the size comparison provided.

I think many of you are over analysing. lol
I say no doubt a wolf. It's definetly not a yote. Legs are too long.
I think it's pretty easy case actually.

RE: Coyote, wolf, or???? (updated)

Its not a coyote. Size or no size... coyote's eyes reflect BLUE and that joker has yellow eyes, which means it either a wolf, a dog or some mix of the two. I guess it depends where dan has this camera at. If its in his neighborhood, I reckon its a dog. If its in the sticks... its probably a wolf.

I've seen plenty of huskies, and never seen a wolf... but if I was to see it with my own eyes, I'd probably believe you if you told me it was a wolf.

Wolf and coyote, you guys crack me up. It's a fricken dog or domesticatedhusky/ wolf hybrid. Not a full fledge wolf. Case closed.:D
WRONG!

Dan gave me permission to let the cat out of the bag and according to the poll, 72% of you are absolutely right! This is a wolf and the picture was taken in Canada. He said that there are no coyotes there at all and a good pack of wolves which this is one of them. He has two tags for them he's hoping to fill. He hears them around camp very often. He told me to come clean for him since he left for his trip and the site was down.

For you guys thinking it was a dog, NO WAY, for those thinking it was a coyote....ErrtT WRONG.

It's a WOLF, and that's the final answer. ;)

Sorry hch, ;).

Well, It is probably a dog wolf hybrid cross and it will actually have to be shot/trapped anddna extracted to be proven a pure wolf. Just because the pic was taken in Canada doesn't mean jack.;) I owned a Wolf/Hybrid over 20 years ago and it was registered at 75% wolf and it looked very similiar to that pic except mine looked like more wolf than this one. Because Dan says it is a wolf doesn't mean that it is. Not convinced based on just heresay and opinion. :D

I said WOLF, and I'm sticking to it!!!
Ive seen many wolves(50-60)in mylife, and ifthat is not a wolf, then I've seen many wild dogs!!!I've even witnessed a wolf pack hunt!!! One of the coolest things I've witnessed in my life!!! Middle of winter, on Black Duck Lake in northern MN!! Several of us were there on a snowmobile weekend!!! It was about 8am when someone noticed 2 wolves on the ice in the middle of the bay!!! They spread out about 100yds apart turned around and lied in the snow both facing south!!! One was about 100yds from the cabin, and the other about 200yds.Wehad glasses to confirm they were wolves!! They bothliedthere for about 20 minutes when I noticedawolf come out of the woods in the middle of the 2 that were there!! Then 3 more come out all spread out about 50ydsapart!! The 2 that has been laying there then got up and started trotting down the bay away from us, and 2 of theother4 followed them. The other 2 went a lied in the same spot as the first 2, except they looked in the opposite direction! The other 4 ran up the lake then cut into the woods and about 30 minutes later, they came out of the woods on the north shore all spread out again!!! They didn't manage to chase anything on to the lake, but there is no doubt in my mind that those wolves were doing a drive!!!

Too fat and well fed to be a wolf. As too small a body structure.

Well I'll have to tend to believe Dan in this instance, having more wolf experience than myself (none and I still picked wolf) and more so than you own, I'll go with Dan on this one but of course we'll have to wait til he returns from his trip to defend himself. Don't shoot the messenger. ;)

Many people don't realize how different wolves, foxes or other animals look when they are in summer coat as opposed to winter coat.

Look at how different whitetail deer look between the two seasons.

That pic is of a wolf in summer coat.

I hate to be a grave digger, but I had to bring this thread back up since I couln't respond before I left for Alberta.

With that said.......I'm glad to see that 68% of you got it right.....what happened to the rest of you?[&:]

I GURANTEE this is a 100% pure bred wolf. There are no coyotes up here.....and a wolf/dog mix, that's laughable.....sorry HCH. I'm amazed at how many people actually believe wolves go around breeding with dogs and there are a bunch of mixes out there. Could it happen....maybe.....but very unlikely. I gurantee you that, up here, if a dog was running wild and ran into a pack of wolves he/she would be dead within seconds. A wolf would sooner kill a dog than look at them.....in heat or not in heat.

Sooooo......I gotta go get a tag and see if I can put one into this big male wolf.:)

RE: Coyote, wolf, or???? (answered page 6)

Well I agree it is a wolf. But as for dogs breeding other critters I shot a coyote out from under a australian sheperd once. We had a whole pack of coy-dogs running around here and they were causing all kinds of trouble for area farmers. Happy to say after 2 weeks of coyote hunting the problem was solved. We killed 7 of them and some were very weirdly marked. One was even spotted like a Australian sheperd.

Dog, and fed by a man.
I’m not embarrassed to be wrong. Isn’t that part of learning? I’ve never hunted wolf. I’ll trust that Dan is the man, and is correct. Thanks for going back and “grave-digging” as you said.
You said a while back something like “I was thinking of you the other day KP” and we had a laugh. Well I was also thinking about you the other day. I was wondering what the outcome of this thread was, but must have gotten side tracked before doing some digging myself.
Hope you had a good trip,
KP

i'll agree with this... coydogs are quite common in the south as well... they also tend to be quite a bit bigger than most pure bred yote's also... and a lot more brazen during daylight hours...

Comparing dogs breeding coyotes and breeding wolves is like comparing apples and oranges. I could see it happening with a coyote, but the chances are extremely slim that it would happen with a wolf.
