He killed seventeen deer, last year.....

Buck Mastr 101 and I shot 3D Saturday with a gentleman from TN....and we got to talking about deer hunting (actually.....it never came up until we got to target 17...lol). He told us he killed SEVENTEEN, last year.

(OK....I think I said "Master"...out loud...but I played it off):D

Before anyone gets the wrong idea....he said he still had 6 people on the waiting list to get the meat when he finished.

What's the most you've ever heard of any one person taking in one year with the bow? Has nothing to do with being a great hunter/good hunter/blah, blah, blah......just pure numbers.

Here in TN it is no problem to kill 17 deer a year especially if you hunt in unit L where during archery season you can kill 2 bucks during thewhole archery seasonand 3 does per day and the statewide buck limit is 3 all year. We killed a total 3 bucks and 28 does on our farm last year between me, my buddy and his wife we gave 26 of the does to hunters for the hungr and we kept the rest of the meat.1200 acre farm tryin to do a little QDM

Many southern boys will harvest 10-15 a season.

No big deal.

Back when I was in college and money was tight, I would work on thier butts.

17 is not unheard of.

Till just recently my family would eat 6 a year easy.

Bear in mind these were Florida deer lucky to be 100# live weight

I have never either and never been down south hunting. I do hear that the deer are smaller in body size is this true compared to here In Wisconsin?

The deerare smaller in boady size because we do not have cold winters the average mature buck here in TN will field dress between 180 and 200 pounds average mature doe around 110 to 130 pounds

peakrut 08-20-2007 02:48 PM

RE: He killed seventeen deer, last year.....

hmmm from what I have read 130 is big for a doe even around my part of the midwest for a doe.
Even mature bucks about the same with some of course going higher.
I thought much smaller then what you stated just by perception.

i have seen does that push 200 lbs. live weight, 140-160 is more common though.

RE: He killed seventeen deer, last year.....

I checked out TN a few years back and even though they aren't really any farther south than we are here in SEMO, the deer I saw were small. Even the nicer bucks taken on the WMA we were looking to hunt ran a bit small. I'd say, fully admitting a limited experience, that a large buck there ould go 180-200 # live weight, which would put them about a 1/3 less once feild dressed. Someone had taken a nice 10 point, probably 135" or so buck that had a live weight of 179#. Most of the guys we talked with said that was a good buck.

The most I've taken in a season was 5. Only one was with a bow though.

There is a kid back home who doesnt go to school, and lives off of his parents, so he has tons of time to do whatever. He has some hunting areas where the owners have said to kill any deer that moves. He killed 43 deer last year (bow and rifle kills). I dont like the idea of someone shooting that many, it just sounds absurd.

Yeah, buddy. Hardeman County, TN. I was there last year. It's easy to see why they have those limits.

We are lucky enough to have a tremendous population here in Southern Illinois and liberal doe bag limits to go with it. I killed 9 does and 1 buck with my bow two years ago. It was a lot of fun, but also a heck of a lot of work since we butcher our own.

Most I killed in a season with my bow is 4. I did take 3 of them on the same day within 15 minutes of each other right after a blizzard next to my fooplot in my CRP. If you include rifle in here, I'd guess on an average year with bow/rifle anywhere from 8-15 depending on if I can get rid of all the meat.

In the great state of Maryland you can take unlimited does and up to 6 bucks if you apply for the extra stamp.

I personally have taken 22 does and 1 137 inch buck 3 seasons ago, that includes the 2 farms I do crop damage on and my private community hunts. All but 4 where taken with bow the rest where shotgun and muzzleloader. 95% of the meat was given to the church and the poor.

The biggest doe weighed 238 lbs dressed.
The smallest doe weighed 22lbs undressed.

I think the most I ever killed in one season with a bow was 6 off heavily hunted public land... Now I'm sure the guy your so in all about did it on private land with corn fields and food plots... I say private land deer are like 10 times easier to kill then pressured public land deer... So if my math is right... That's like me killing 60 deer in one season...:DI've got a little couple hundred acre farm hear in Md that is loaded with deer... I know there is going to be houses built there in the next couple years... So I've been planning on raping and pilaging this place this fall... I'll let ya know how many I kill the first week... The first year I hunted it I killed like 5 and only hunted it like 3 times...

I catch a lot of flack when I compare public land to private, about how hard the hunting is on public land verse private...How hard do you think it is hunting deer at your petting zoo???

Notice I said mature bucks and does- If you kill any where from a 2.5 to 3.5 the will only go 130 to 150 pds that is not a mature deer. I killed the 10 I killed 3 years ago field dressed at 142pdsand was only 3.5 yrs old. The 9 point my father killed in 1987 field dressed at 178 pounds and was 4.5 yr old. My neighbor is a TWRA Wildlife Biologist and has the numbers for deer. They always check them on opening days and then do a check with slaughter house to keep up with the amount of mature and inmature deer weights and all the other biological stuff.

Jeff that is small potatoes! There is a club around here that hires out to subdivisions and municipalities, and golf coursesto take care of their deer problems. These guys set up right next the houses and bird feeders and flower gardens. Some of them have killed 60-70 deer in a season. NO JOKE, there was a write up about these guys in a local hunting mag.More as nuscense control than anything else. MO has a Hunters Feeding The Hungry program that they donate the meat to.

The most I personnaly have killed in one season was 8. A friend of mine has killed 10 a couple of times.

By the way doe tags are unlimited for most of the state with archery gear. $7.00 a piece for as many as you want to buy.

TerryM 08-20-2007 08:16 PM

RE: He killed seventeen deer, last year.....

This is totally amazing kills. Where I hunt you can harvest 1 deer per year and thats a buck. The doe tags are on a lottery and the odds were 65% last year of drawing but that counts as your 1 deer for the season. You can party hunt and fill other peoples tags though. Shooting 10 + deer a year is darn near impossible up here. We just don't have anywhere near those populations. We do have moose and bear to round things out though. Nailed a bear last week that was getting too bold.

One who claims to have killed 52 in one year with The bow alone...

I dont like this guy... (if i have to say why you should be very dissapointed with yourself)

RE: He killed seventeen deer, last year.....

I have shot 3 in one weekend with the shotgun..all 3 were bucks though. Some guys in our party have killed 4 a couple years. I have never heard of anybody killing a number in the teens. We party hunt so we usually end up with 1 or 2 guys that shoot a couple deer.
