Taking one off the ground??
Think I might try this, this season.
Is it as big a rush as people say it is? Who's done this? Who's done it with trad. gear? |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
Only ever one with a bow Jeff, 2005's Buck, you can see it in my teams contest thread, remember 4 points one side, 12" spike on the other. I was hunting turkeys out of a ground blind when I took him at 19" yards. Yes it was a rush.....not more or less though, perhaps it was the blind. Well, there was a little more to the rush, it was my first and only birthday deer.
My one want is to take one on the ground while stalking a corn field. |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I've taken 6 deer off the ground with the bow. It's a rush, no doubt. You have to be prepared to get busted alot, at least I did. I didn't use a ground blind though, I just hid in blow downs etc.

RE: Taking one off the ground??
I got the buck in my avatar last year off the ground using doe in estrus scent and rattling antlers...but hes not a monster and it was with a hoyt.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
First bow buck 8 point taken off the ground, no blind just kneeling in a tree-line. shot from me knees.
No bigger rush..but i'd never hunted from a treestand..so it was the norm for me. |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
It's a rush for me. You "fail" alot but it can be alot of fun.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
If it's "no big deal".....then I'll stay perched.
Taking a turkey with the bow vs. shotgun was a totally different experience (both in mindset, season approach, and level of difficulty....for ME). THAT is the kind of difference I was looking for.....or I won't try it. |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I took my elk at 12 yards off the ground with my bow, but never took a deer with a bow on the ground. It would be a rush! I know the elk was.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I think it is a huge deal. I have taken many deer from the ground with a rifle but only one with the bow. It was exciting. It was a doe at 5 yards. I pulled on her when she was about 30 yards and had to wait for her to stop. It was a rush

RE: Taking one off the ground??
I took mybuck off the ground last year. I was pumped up, shot him at about 12 yards. I had 3 smaller bucksbrowsing around me before he came out. I wasn't using a blind either just natural cover.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I whacked one out of a ground blind last year...It's a blast! Being eye level w/ them at 10 yards is incredible.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I took a buck 2 seasons ago while hunting on the ground - it was a HUGE rush!
I was sitting in a cut corn field at the time and I swear the sound of my heart beating out of my throat was louder than the buck's hoof steps through the dried stalks! |

Deer from the ground are fun, but a bear from a blind is a rush.;)
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
every1 remember that guy that was chraged by a moose that he shot at ground lvl. i be that was rush
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I've taken 5-6 deer from the ground with stick and string. It's a rush.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
Deer from the ground are fun, but a bear from a blind is a rush.;) Do you allow this? That's the only way I'd want to do it. |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I missed the biggest buck i have ever shot at. It was a big 9, i was on the ground in a blind i made out of brush. It was a huge rush (thats why I missed[&o])
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
Ive taken a few from the ground. Definately fun especially with a longbow or recurve but would not try it if I were going after a trophy buck. I get a big enough rush from a tree stand and after 26 years of bowhunting I think my chances are greatly increased from a tree stand.

RE: Taking one off the ground??
Fair enough, Charlie. It's a good point.....
I think the longbow and the ground thing might "do it" for me. It might be next year, though. |

ORIGINAL: GMMAT Deer from the ground are fun, but a bear from a blind is a rush.;) Do you allow this? That's the only way I'd want to do it. I encourage it...but most are too chicken to do it. It is pretty likely that a bear will check you or the ground blind out....as soon as I mention that, it's "no thanks, I'll stick to the tree stand." :) |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
Is it possible to shoot a bow with a sidearm in your release hand?:)
And.....if I came up....would you film it?:):D |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
The communist country of Canada has banned all handguns....lame.[:@]
I would be happy to......how fast can you run? |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
FASTER THAN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
Not very..but if we bring Rob..I can probably out limp him at this point!
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I have taken them on the ground with Trad equipment and cant really say it was a bigger rush than from a stand with a compound, I get pretty excited either way I must say!
There was one that I will never forget though. I was walking in on a 2 track that had a small ridge line running along side of it on the upwind side of me, when I herd a deer blow and take off running, I blew back and herd the deer stop, so I took up a position behind several small (like 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall) oak trees that still had brown leaves on them for cover, let out a soft grunt and began rubing one of the small oaks with the limb of my bow, the deer would move closer and stop, I would rub the small oak,and this went on till I seen his tines above the ridge line. This was when my heart started beating so hard I thought it was going to pop my ear drums, to make a long story short, I ended up spine shooting that buck and he rolled half way down the ridge and ended up about 10 yards in front of me, A nice 9 pt! If that is not enough Rush for you, ya need to take up sky diving, clif jumpingor swimming with the sharks or something else.:D |

RE: Taking one off the ground??
The doe in my avatar was taken off the ground. It is my first bow deer. I sat on the edge of a pasture with my back to an oak tree. I was in deep shade, she had the sun in her face. I shot her at 5 yards and watched her fall about 45 yards away. What a thrill!
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
Took three off the ground last year. Can't say if it's more of a rush than in the tree because I have yet to kill from one but it got my blood pumping.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
My first nine years of bowhunting was on the ground. Not in a blind. I made some natural blinds and used many ambush spots to catch them off guard. I think the difficulity factor goes way up. By the way your PM box is full.
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I may have access to 30 more acres that's teaming with deer. If I get in there.....I might give it a go in a natiral ground blind. What the heck????
Thanks for all of the opinions/replies. |
RE: Taking one off the ground??
i took my first deer off the ground and ive never felt the same rush taht i didn that night...maybe cuz it was my first...but idk...it was awesome
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
Ok, I can't say I ever shot any animal with a bow but I sure have stalked lots of them. And I do get a rush everytime....
you can see some pics on my flickr account because getting them on HNI big enough to be seen is a real pain in the.... I stalked a young buck once in a cut cornfield in the fog, I managed to come up very close, about 4 or 5metersand after taking some pics I spooked him, the noise must have bounced off the end of the forest or the echo must have confused him because he ran straight to me and ran me over..... RE: Taking one off the ground??
It's the norm up here. I've taken more animals from the ground than from a tree. It's definitely more of a "rush", challenging and satisfying, especially when there's the potential of them eating you!

RE: Taking one off the ground??
Never tried it but what I have been reading sounds like a great rush
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
And if your really looking for a challenge... Do it with out bait;)
|
RE: Taking one off the ground??
I've killed 4-5 off the ground... Not really much difference in the rush to me... In fact, I prefer the trees. I believe your knees knock harder when your 20ft up a tree! ;)
