A 200 lb live weight deer around my house is a big deer. I have seen 2 killed that went over 200 on the hoof. Although i killed a 3.5 yr old 8 point that was 172 lbs.and a 2.5 that was 189 lbs. That is a nice recovery on that deer though. I still have some with messed up racks, but luckily whereI saw "Rob's" deer i also saw two 10 points last night that would both go over 125". Since the hunting club beside us stopped killing everything and planting plots the deer have gotten ton's bigger. I have never seen deer like this around here. Jeff, i hope you lay the smack down on that one in your quest for does, it would be a nice addition to the season wouldnt it.

A deers weight is directly attributed to the distance it was from your truck when youshot itadded to angle of the incline you have to drug it up.

I have personally seen fawns of the year weigh in at over 165 lbs when they were shot on the back side of old stone mountain. [:o]
And yet I have watchedthe sameteenager grab a 4.5 year old ten point and get it to the truck faster than Rosie doing a bag of Dorito's. ;)

Honestly, I've lived in enough regions that everyone weighs them differently. I typically gut them on the spot when I find them and weigh them as dressed though. To give you an example of how big they are in southern tier NY and northern tier PA area......my 06' rifle buck in NY was aged as 3.5 and weighed in at 158 dressed. He didn't have an ounce of fat on him either and was killed well after the rut......I believe he was taken on 11/26.......I imagine he would have been a bit heavier back in October.



Edit - Andspeaking ofrecovering, this guy somehow damaged the pedicle on his right side as a youngster and never recovered. I have a european mount of him and there is really nothing now on the skull but a num....no defined pedicle. My buddy Dan saw and passed this year the year before I shot him and he had the same type of antler on his head too........just smaller. Other than the rack though, he was a very healthy deer. You should have seen the scars on his head and neck though from fighting.

I'd love to kill me a bruiser.....but with our herd dynamic the way it is....I've got a bunch of lovers and not fighters.

My buddy also has a QDMA "scale" that's supposed to be pretty accurate. You measure the buck's (deer's)chest ....and then there's a formula for live weight. My gambrel has a scale.

Jeff, I wouldn't put much faith in that chest measurement thing. I help out a buddy of mine who is a taxi during gun season. There are guys that bring in deer that they say by the chest measurement weighs XXX. Well he has a de-liar (scale), that tells the real story. And rarely do the 2 weights come close to one another. Just like people, some deer carry their weight in different places. And some are longer than others. Some of the bucks we skin out never get their noses off the ground when we hang them. Others are a foot or more off the ground. The only people I believe when talking about weight are the ones that have actually had them on a scale.
