Same deer.....good recovery...
I posted some photos a while back of a buck I have in my woods with a good left side and a deformed (underformed?) right side. At first....I thought it was another buck I have in my woods. It's not.....but he has made a great "recovery".
Still learning these animals....but this is incredible in my book. First sighting..... ![]() |

Recovery......

RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Elapsed time is 22 days.

RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Mornin Jeff,
I would say yes same buck. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
GMMAT,
Is that "The Bull"? |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Great recovery, looking good. I like how his left side really hooks. Hopefully before the hardening takes place his right will finish hard.
Shooter Jeff? |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
I'd shoot this deer because he's 3.5....for no other reason. He'll also likely outscore my last year's buck.
He's one I'm hoping I see. No. This is not the one I call the bull. The bull just has a bigger body (compared to the other deer, here....which is how he got his name). This is a 180#+ deer. The bull will go 200#'s easily. That's a big bodied deer for my woods. You'd know that, Rob. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Yep... you still got a good gene pool.

RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Thats pretty cool,Hope you get-em.
|
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
I mean standing (or laying) just like he is.
Forgive me guys....I'm not familiar with the jargon ....having only hunted 2 seasons. I understand "field dressed" weight......but I live so close to my hunting areas....I weigh them "entrails incl." or live weight. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Wowbig deer...below off the Pa DNR websight:
In Pennsylvania the average adult buck weighs about 140 pounds live weight and stands 32 to 34 inches at the shoulder. He is about 70 inches long from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail. His tail vertebrae add only about 11 inches, but the long hair makes it far more conspicuous. Does tend to average less in weight and body length than males of the same age from the same area. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Cool.
I weighed my 2.5 yr old last year @ 172 lbs.....Sept. 30th. The 3.5 yr old I killed weighed 171 lbs.....taken 12/12. "average", though.....lol....What's an "adult buck"? 1.5? 2.5? 3.5? If you take out the BB's and the 1.5 yr olds....that information is just plain false. Add in MY 1.5 yr olds....and they won't go 125 lbs....except in rare occurrences. Most 2.5 yr olds here won't go 140, either. Some will go way over that. I kinda tend to target the bigger ones I have, here. No sense in shooting a 130 lb 2.5 yr old.....or ANY 1.5 yr old (in MY opinion.....in MY woods). You guys do what makes you happy. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
I think our deer are actually growing as far as body weight. I find that 140 average to be a tad short coming.
My 2.5, 3.5 year old bucks I've taken the last 6 years all go over 150 and more towards 175 if not more. A budy of mine took a 217 lb field dressed buck at his cabin, weighed in at a meat locker, biggest bodied buck I've ever seen. It filled his Dakota bed, would have been a 240 plus pound deer live. I'm not sure I ever took a 200 lb deer yet myself, never weighed them however I'd surmise they are clearly 160 plus..... 140 average seems very low. I also wonder if that were summer weight, winter weight or when? |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
I agree with the summer/winter thing. I know the trasnformation they go through between now and prime acorn time is phenomenal. Then...they lose weight during the rut (bucks).
When would they be estimating them? |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
I don't know..as an estimate I would think that they take the averages for age structureand the average of winter weight vs summer weight etc. Only by combining all the ranges could one make a reasonable estimate.
|
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
I agree, GR8......makes sense.
There was a 2.5 yr old last year that I think was another 160-170lb'er......the half-rack. Other than that one deer.......it would have been a 3.5 or older to get that kind of weight here. One1.5yr old that might have gone 140, also. THAT deer will test me if I see him, THIS year. I hope he stays just out of range:). |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Forgive me guys....I'm not familiar with the jargon Just thought you would like to know.:) |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
I appreciate it duc....but I "Assumed" everyone knew when I give a deer's weight that it was live weight....if I didn't say (_____lbs, field dressed).
Thats what I meant. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Thanks for sharing the pics GMMAT, our deer commonly get up to 220 live wait (depending on time of year)
|
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
A 200 lb live weight deer around my house is a big deer. I have seen 2 killed that went over 200 on the hoof. Although i killed a 3.5 yr old 8 point that was 172 lbs.and a 2.5 that was 189 lbs. That is a nice recovery on that deer though. I still have some with messed up racks, but luckily whereI saw "Rob's" deer i also saw two 10 points last night that would both go over 125". Since the hunting club beside us stopped killing everything and planting plots the deer have gotten ton's bigger. I have never seen deer like this around here. Jeff, i hope you lay the smack down on that one in your quest for does, it would be a nice addition to the season wouldnt it.
|
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Wow, Amazing how they can do that. I'd say nice recovery.
|
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Oneshot....I'd welcome this addition any time!:)
I may not ever see him from stand (or his buddy)...but it's nice knowing they're out there. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
A deers weight is directly attributed to the distance it was from your truck when youshot itadded to angle of the incline you have to drug it up.
I have personally seen fawns of the year weigh in at over 165 lbs when they were shot on the back side of old stone mountain. [:o] And yet I have watchedthe sameteenager grab a 4.5 year old ten point and get it to the truck faster than Rosie doing a bag of Dorito's. ;) |

I have a european mount of him and there is really nothing now on the skull but a num....no defined pedicle. My buddy Dan saw and passed this year the year before I shot him and he had the same type of antler on his head too........just smaller. Other than the rack though, he was a very healthy deer. You should have seen the scars on his head and neck though from fighting. |
RE: Same deer.....good recovery...
Matt that's a nice deer!
I'd love to kill me a bruiser.....but with our herd dynamic the way it is....I've got a bunch of lovers and not fighters. My buddy also has a QDMA "scale" that's supposed to be pretty accurate. You measure the buck's (deer's)chest ....and then there's a formula for live weight. My gambrel has a scale. |
