What would you do?

You can tell who the employer's and employee's are here.My advice would be to be straight with the guy.Tell him that hunting is your passion and that you intend to do a great job for him and your company and this is a time of year where you try to grab a day here and there. For the definition of personal days refer to your employee manual or handbook if you have one.
Any employer or boss worth their salt is going to be appreciative of someone who is being straight with them and giving them plenty of advance notice.Bottom line though if you are good to them they will be good to you.So if you are a great employee they would be foolish not to recognize and appreciate you!

I totally agree with tsoc, this is honest, sound advice. Your boss will appreciate it and respect you for it. People by nature dont like confrontation which is usually why they procrastinate and then demand. If handled like tsoc advised and soon it'll be alright and you can hold your head high.

Iagree with them fellas that said to be up front with the boss!
Ihope your job don't turn out like my last job--Take a vacation day off to go hunting--you got put on the black list--
But if youwanted a day off to play in a golf tournament NO PROBLEM--even knowed of guys gettin paid for the day(no vactation time)for company golf tournament!
"Sorry just venting"

They're your days and you need to take them. No competent leader would suggest that their people should forgoe vacation to work. In the end, the team is better off if people are happy.

Where I work the so called "Bosses" can't complain about us common Laborers taking off for Deer Season because they take off to go Hunting also...if they ever complain about how many people take off then all of us can complain about the Big Dogs taking off too! [:'(][:'(]
A few of the Bosses acted like they had to take off for other reasons but as said...in a small town everyone knows your business and what your up to when your over heard bragging about shooting a big Buck!
If your always there for work on time and you have helped others out or done over-time when work gets busy you should be able to take off when you want to.Deer Season should be a declared Holiday and you get a free week off. LOL
