Polartech all the way. It's the only stuff that has kept me warm.

Under Armor won't keep you warm if you aren't moving.

Brynje's fish net long underwear as first layer,nothing else wicks like this stuff.Second layer either Patagonia Capilene or smart wool long underwear.Both come in various weights.Last layer before outer garment would be Ulfrotte wool long underwear,also comes in various weights.
I can't emphasize enough how well the Brynje's stuff wicks! I think the most important thing is to stay dry and to start out feeling cold and adding layers as needed,unfortunately if someone is covering ground in cold weather a pack will be necessary to carry the layers that you wont need while moving.

But I hunt in Arkansas so that's usually not a big issue.

To be more specific:

-base layer is always Cabelas BugSkinz (fits skin tight)
-over that is either a UA heat gear tight long sleeve shirt + UA loose gear camo, or UA cold gear tight + Polarfleece pullover.

For pants, I just put on the Bugskinz, and regular cotton camo pants (if its cold, I'll put on Duofold under the pants)

And for extreme cold in late rifle season, I'll just add some overalls and my Cabelas Ultimate Suede jacket

What ever I can find that will work. No cotton. Wool is great but so are some of the sinthetics. Wish the made some in alpaca wool.

If it's really cold, I'll toss on another heavy fleece jacket. If it's really warm, I'll just use the BaseSlayers and Wolfskin.

very interesting topic !! i was just thinking about the same thing .. due to a trip to AK. at the end of the month ... dont want to pack too much but want to cover all weather last time 85-90 degrees above the artic cicle and i was sweltering to death so this year i'm thinking savanna for hot and thin base layer close to skin and if it colds up and snow dakota worn over this.......

and whom ever is wearing the fish net I jst don't want to go there!!!:eek:[8D]:D

For 20-50 degree weather...

I just bought a fleece jacket from predator that will do the trick, its a heavy fleece.
That will go over a Silent Weave shirt, underarmor cold gear, and a cotton teeshirt.
I'd probably pack in a goose down or fleece vest to throw on if I got chilly


And by far the best thing for keeping you warm is a Fleece Neck Gaitor... I never leave home w/o mine in colder weather... makes a huge difference

I have the ScentBlocker UnderGuard XLT that I use for early season and I also use it for base layers. Very good stuff IMO. There under the same link that Greg typed upat Robinson Outdoors.
