Default How many shots till dull

OK guys realistically(spelling) I only takes one shot into a block 4x4 or a deer target to dull our broadheads. Last night I took around 100 shots with4 different heads 2 mech. and2 fixxed, and am very happy with the results ofthree of themand will be usingthem at different times throughout the season. Now I would like to know what you guys do with your heads right before the legal season to take a deer. Do you guys use them the way they are, resharpen them, or......If you do resharpen them how do you guys do it and what do you use. My season does not start till mid Oct. so I will be taking alot more shots with the same heads and would like to know what to do I have heard before that some people would rather be cut with a sharp blade then a dull blade, just dont think this is the case when hunting, or am I wrong? If you guys could give me a little insight about this I would appreciate it... Thanks

I shoot the broadheads till season and either get new blades for them or just replace them altogether.I have tried to resharpen usually just more convenient to buy new. I always shoot at least once with the new blades just for piece of mind.

I always shoot Muzzy 100gr 3-blades for practice. I will only use a "brand new" BH to shoot at a deer.I'm funny like that..... Respect!

FowlBuck,

I guess the real question here is ow sharp is sharp enough. IMO A broadhead or knife should be sharp enough to EASILY shave hair. Arteries are elastic in nature so a good test to see if your broadheads are sharp enough is to try to cut a rubberband that is stretched between two fingers. If it doesn't cut the rubber band easily its not sharp enough. Unfortunately, IMO,most broadheads are not sharp enough out of the package.

I use a Lanskey sharpener to put a good edge on a blade that is really dull and I follow it up with a leather strop and stropping compound.

Here is a great video that shows how to use the strop and stropping compound on the Slick Trick broadheads, which is what I am using. It will help give you a general idea of the process. It is now the only process I use for my broadheads and my knives. It is amazing how sharp you can make them.

I bought a leather strop and some polish from Smokey Mountian Woodcarvers.

The strop was $4.00 :

The stropping I use is called Yelowstone and is $6.25

Early in, I'm hesitant to shoot a particular broadhead for the first time at game.

I'm fairly new to this, but it seems to me that there is a possibility (very small) that something
might be wrong with the head or its specs not right on. Last year I marked the 2 arrows with bh
that I thought flew the best (probably a lot in my head) and used those. It's mostly a confidence
game anyway.

I will be doing the same thing this year, but will make sure they are razor sharp.

If it's been shot it's dull. I have three G5 Montec's that are set aside for practice and 6 that are set aside for hunting. The hunting heads get stoned and stropped out of the package (since I think G5's aren't very sharp from the factory) and they get a periodic maintenance stropping during the season to ensure that they are beyond razor sharp. I think sharp broadheads are too often overlooked as a key element in bowhunting.

I have five sets of practice blades that I shoot for 3 weeks before opening day. Im like LebeauHunter, I pick the one that has the best flight and the second best and so on and so on. The night before opeing day I replace my practice blades with new ones.

If you've ever shot it or even let it roll around loose in a hip quiver..ITS DULL!
I either replace the blades on muzzy/thunderhead style heads (I've tried to resharpen them...possible...but a pain in the rump to deal with those thin little things!)

For you guys that are nervous about a "new" head flying true I think of it this way: Razorsharp blade two inches off is likely to be just as good as a dull one that's spot-on. Soo, you can use a almost sharp blade and know you're giving up an edge (no pun) or you can use a "new" blade and take a chance of being in the same position you would've been in.

My opinion anyways...do what you're comfortable with.

You said it, although the montec's are getting sharper out of the box IMO
