Are you going to do any hunting with that bow this year?

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

AHHHhhhh Grasshopper/teammate.......vewwy persweptive.

I missed on the last arrow....the WHOLE TARGET!!!.....lol[&:]:D

No hunting with this thing, this year. It'll be practice and fun until I become the doeminator of '08 with the longbow. Man is it fun, though.

Wheeew .... thats good , at least you might be able to put some meat in your freezer.

I think I see arrow #6 sticking in a headstone.:D

I would say nice shooting for your first time.

GMMAT 08-11-2007 07:42 AM

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

It's just totally different. The only thing you have is your technique (which I'm sure needs work).....and your God given abilities/imagination. You see a spot.....feel it.....and release.

No pins/peeps/etc...

That's the aspect I find I like. I feel like I've always been good with hand/eye things.....and this is SO MUCH like golf.....(I've been saying that a long time....but it's especially true about trad shooting....if you asked me).....it's scary.

Time will tell if I get proficient enough to hunt .....but I feel like I'm gonna take to it, nicely. We'll see.

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

Jeff, lookin good already bud! you just might be my inspiration. even before buying my bow last summer, i always thought shooting a longbow, making wooden arrows etc would be plain fun...and accuracy would come with time and practice. its on my list of things to do...but that list is mighty long lol. definently not this summer...maybe next. i think if i get into that, Dad will get into it with me...he used to shoot a compound back in the day. i hear stories of how he was a great bowhunter from guys that dont even know me...he shot fingers, no peep or anything etc...it would be nice to get back into something with good ole dad. since i turned 16 our time together has diminished...our schedules just dont meet up. he been sayin hed like to get into shooting a recurve or long bow...heck i even ordered some Trad catalogs to try to entice him lol...

keep with it Jeff...i will be here to root ya on...just like the turkey with a bow!

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way. I just think everyone ought to try it (trad) IF....if they ever thought they might. It's a different animal.

It's gonna be a lot of fun.

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

Hey Jeff........if you're shooting a longbow with your hat turned to the front then you aren't anchoring. ;):D
IF I try to shoot forgetting to turn my hat around I'll knock it about clear off my head.

Good looking first couple arrows! How cool is that bow?:) Its holding a feather compared to the metal bows huh?
How's the draw weight feel?

I like to anchor with my middle finger in the corner of my mouth just behind the eye tooth. (I'll edit with a pitcure of my form and anchor) Everyone is different but if that pic is you ready to shoot you are floating out front.

That's pretty cool Jeff. Keep up the shooting and show us your progress. i haven't shot a stick bow in 20+ yrs and probably would miss the bail with more than 1 arrow.

GMMAT 08-11-2007 01:24 PM

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

I hear ya on the floating thing, Matt.....and I looked at your pic, too. Are you able to see with both eyes with your bow that vertical?

As far as me anchoring......I've been placing my index finger glove in the corner of my mouth.....and I haven't hit my cap brim, yet. Maybe that's not right????

I shot 31 shots from 15 yds at the bow shop, today. I missed the square paper target only twice......and 2 different rounds (of 6 arrows) I put all arrows inside the 3rd scoring ring on the target. Whoulda thunk it?:D

I can ONLY speak for me (and I dont want anyone to think this statement has anything to do with them)......but after shooting only as little as I have....I know I won't be satisfied as an archer.....until I take a big game animal with my longbow. Hunting may change for me.....as soon as we get a handle on the herd dynamics, here.;)

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

WOW, got a traditional eh!! what bow is it?? Thats one thing i have always wanted to drag back out and hunt with one of these days. My Dad had kept both my recurves that i started with as a youth. I recently got them back and have them in my basement. They both need new strings.
one of these days.

GMMAT 08-11-2007 03:31 PM

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

Thanks for asking, Bloodcreek.

On the advice of my future fellow Pronghorn chasin' buddy....Matt/PA.....I bought a Fred Bear Montana longbow......50#'s (I got the 0% letoff model;)).....64".

So far.....it's been a lot of fun. I'm gonna go shoot a few more arrows in a bit. My goal is to hunt with it next Fall as much as I want to....and when I hunt certain stands.

Matt / PA 08-11-2007 04:52 PM

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

Jeff,
There is actually a pretty decent cant there in that pic but it's hard to see. Probably 15 degrees or so?
3 fingers under I like the middle finger in the corner of my mouth because it gets that arrow up closer under my eye and things just seem to line up quicker. Index finger in the corner is too low of an anchor for me and I can't "feel" where the arrow is pointing nearly as well.
If I'm not mistaken the middle finger or even the ring finger in the corner of your mouth is the more standard anchor.

As you become stronger with your form and the muscles adapt to that 0% let off ;)you will find it so easy to slide to and hold anchor. I remember when I was just starting wanting to get rid of the string very quickly.

Now all you need is a little piece of seal skin and some Barge cement to sweeten that shelf area up. :)

I just got done shooting about 50 arrows myself getting ready for the season.

Matt/PA.....thanks for the tips.

I just shot 24 more arrows.......and tried to work on getting that forward lean out of my posture.

Here's a photo I had Lisa snap.

Hooked?

Yep.

Jeff,
Now look at your latest pic, my pic and this one of Bob's (who is a good longbow shooter)
Look at the difference in arrow and hand position between our draws and yours.........You are low and floating. (Just trying to speed up th elearnin' curve for ya ;):D)

His is post #327 (I tried to capture the pic but couldn't)

Matt:

In my defense.....(and like you noted...with 0% letoff I don't stay at full draw for lon...lol)....Lisa probably caught this while I was coming TO anchor....in order to get a full draw photo.

BUT....I'm not saying I don't need to work on this. I will. I'll try anchoring with my ring finger (in the corner of my mouth), tomorrow.

thanks, again.

Matt / PA 08-11-2007 06:54 PM

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

Jeff,
good deal! Try the middle finger that seems to be the most commonly used anchor in the corner of the mouth.

Wait until you start to adapt and stretch out a bit, you'll see that anchor come back and your draw length will probably start to increase as well.......the tendency from what I see on guys who don't shoot traditional much is to go TO the nock. They sort of scrunch the head forward to make up the distance that the body doesn't want to pull that string back.
The more you shoot the more comfortable it will be.
How are the fingers feeling so far? I remember I had some serious aches in my fingers early on because I like the feel of the thinner gloves and my draw weights and length are a little on the heavy/long side. My finger tips would get quite swollen and numb because I just wanted to shoot and shoot and shoot.
It finally went away and I can shoot discomfort free. That seemed to be a big hurdle.

My fingers are fine. I only shot 50+ times, yesterday. I may get some sore fingers, later today......and I'll work on the anchor thing.

Thanks again, Matt.

LOL, Jeff, you have a great mentor here in Matt. After shooting a round of 3D, me with my Allegiance, him with the Black Widow, he's my go to man if I shoot traditional and anyone else he suggests listening too. I know he speaks volumes about the hat. I learned the hard way...lol

Notice the hat, no way in hell can ya shoot that thing properly with the brim forward....lol I'm pretty sure I hit the target on this one didn't I Matt? Course it was a buffalo. ;)

And look two good feet...lmao. [8D]

Here's the teacher/master.

Jeff if you JUST started shooting a longbow, then those groups from 15 are really something to be proud of!

I started back in Feb. and I've have shot a lot (bout an hour a day) I think we are about equal on the groupings from 15.

Its addicting, keep practicing, and you'll get pretty dang awesome in no time flat!

RE: 1st 6 arrows out of the new bow....

Hey swamp, thanks. Yeah.....just started. It's a ton of fun, though....and I'm looking forward to the day I get to hunt with it.

OK.....so here goes day 2 revised form.....and my last 15 yd "group"...lol. It's funny how your standards change with your choice of weapon.

Enjoying all of the constructive criticism. I appreciate the help.
