RE: Deer know When.

Ok you can call me out if this is a dumb question but here it goes,

Why would deer become afraid only during hunting season? If a deer has never ben hit by a bullet, then all it could possibly know is that thereis a little more human activity in the fall, and maybe some loud bangs. I mean the deer doesnt know that we are in the woods to try to kill it.....they are not that smart! I think what im trying to get at is what are they hiding from? In most areas, there are hunters in the deer woods in the spring hunting turkeys, so wouldnt they be just as afraid then too? I dont think i believe in deer "disapearing" right before season. If this sounds to complicated justleave it alone i guess :D

Most animals are alert to their predators and act accordingly. I suppose they know it is hunting season when new smells arise and then they realize the deer population is dwindled down. I don't believe deer are brilliant, but they are good at eluding preadators. Plus, I also think when the foilage on the trees start to fall off deer are more skittish since their cover is gone. However, these are just my observations and I have been known to be wrong. ;)

Right now, in NC it has hit 100 degrees the last 3 days, very few folks in the woods...Come bowseason, I'll be sitting in a tree and its amazing, all around me on adjoining properties I hear guys sighting in their guns, guys hammering, building a new stand back in the woods, 4-wheelers...All sorts of folks getting into the woods starting to scout, whatever, right before the season...

Why wouldn't they know???

I admit to being a snitch.

I had a conference call with a couple of local 2.5 yr olds the other day....and I admit to alerting them of the season dates. I also promised them a season pass. They, in turn, promised to have uncle Carl in my woodlot on the second Saturday of November (if not sooner) to play reindeer games. They also promised to help drag does.....if I agree to only shoot the ugly ones.....which I agreed to, willingly.

Gotta know your woods, guys. It can work to your advantage.

MY area doesn't get to much bow hunting pressure so i don't notice disappearing deer. HOWEVER when ppl start sighting their guns in while they despearelty get ready for the season they begin to go into their underground caves
