RE: Deer know When.
Definately, last year I watched to P&Y bucks all summer long. Every night they where under my stand. I was so excited to hunt that night and never saw those 2 deer all season.

RE: Deer know When.
I wish I knew how they did it,around here they know exactly when it starts.
I think they hear the pickup trucks roll in the night beforeand not leave. They have to hear the beer flowing and howling at the moon and all and just head for the hills. |
RE: Deer know When.
I was kinda thinking the same thing. People have begun combining around here and there's tractors rolling around all other the place. I kinda think it corresponds with the deer getting a little more nervous.

RE: Deer know When.
I guess they correlate it with when those smelly guys start leaving a lot more scent in THEIR woods. Maybe associate it with that human walking into their area ......thinking nothing is seeing, hearing or smelling him. It could also be a couple days after most yahoos sight in their rifles.......or maybe a few days after they see, hear and smell the guys climbing all the trees. Many places.....it's also a couple days (or even THE day) the food starts appearing on the ground.
They'r enot that smart.....but they're far from stupid. |
RE: Deer know When.
the squirrels tell the turkey . they tell the deer. the deer tell the squirrels and the hogs are on guard all of the time, lol......its a vicious cycle, lol.....

RE: Deer know When.
I believe that they defenitely know but in areas wthout much or any pressure on them, they still hang around.

RE: Deer know When.
All the woodland creatures sing "the hunters are coming, the hunters are coming," to a nice
Disney melody. [8D] Could it be the tenfold increase in human activity, along with the four wheelers, shooting, etc.? The gun season also coincides with squirrel and duck hunting, so it sounds like WWIII out there some days. I think this is an advantage for archery depending on where you hunt. Where I'm at a lot of people don't bowhunt, so the deer don't usually have their game face on yet. |
RE: Deer know When.
i think that they dont know the date but they know the danger is there come fall:eek:

RE: Deer know When.
Where I hunt for bow season, deer do not have a clue season has started. I think it is because there is not much hunting precense during bow season.

RE: Deer know When.
Ok you can call me out if this is a dumb question but here it goes,
Why would deer become afraid only during hunting season? If a deer has never ben hit by a bullet, then all it could possibly know is that thereis a little more human activity in the fall, and maybe some loud bangs. I mean the deer doesnt know that we are in the woods to try to kill it.....they are not that smart! I think what im trying to get at is what are they hiding from? In most areas, there are hunters in the deer woods in the spring hunting turkeys, so wouldnt they be just as afraid then too? I dont think i believe in deer "disapearing" right before season. If this sounds to complicated justleave it alone i guess :D |

Right now, in NC it has hit 100 degrees the last 3 days, very few folks in the woods...Come bowseason, I'll be sitting in a tree and its amazing, all around me on adjoining properties I hear guys sighting in their guns, guys hammering, building a new stand back in the woods, 4-wheelers...All sorts of folks getting into the woods starting to scout, whatever, right before the season...
Why wouldn't they know??? |
RE: Deer know When.
I admit to being a snitch.
I had a conference call with a couple of local 2.5 yr olds the other day....and I admit to alerting them of the season dates. I also promised them a season pass. They, in turn, promised to have uncle Carl in my woodlot on the second Saturday of November (if not sooner) to play reindeer games. They also promised to help drag does.....if I agree to only shoot the ugly ones.....which I agreed to, willingly. Gotta know your woods, guys. It can work to your advantage. |
RE: Deer know When.
MY area doesn't get to much bow hunting pressure so i don't notice disappearing deer. HOWEVER when ppl start sighting their guns in while they despearelty get ready for the season they begin to go into their underground caves
