RE: The Selfish Thread to End All Selfish Threads
Ive been skimming these selfish threads and havnt responded yet, its always a tough call cause you put so much work into finding a good deer or the right spot. Ive been in these situations numerous times most of the time it was close buddies that took a deer. It hurts at first, but its not worth it.
It's actually turned into an on-going joke around our hunting camp, we've all learned to keep our mouths shut until you have the deer in your hands.... And we always get caught tellin stories to throw our buddies off the scent, so needless to say we get lots of laughs when a member gets real sneaky and hunts the same area alot, when hes only seeing a few small bucks and some does...;) It helps ease the tension, and we all show respect to another mans hard work... A life long friend of mine knew I'd been huntin a specific deer, in a specific spot, he went on the other side of the bedding area I was hunting one day when we both were hunting (on my land), well a doe was startin to estrus and towed the buck right to the bottom of his tree, and he smoked it. You bet I was upset, found the sheds, scouted the buck all summer, had him just outta bow range 2 times, but i got over it, and helped him drag it out. He could tell I was disapointed by the look on my face when i first saw it, but it wasnt a big deal, it was just a deer. He did feel a little bad and has given me some secrets that have payed off... The buck hangs in his cabin now and just bout every time I'm over there he points the buck and says, "did i tell you the story bout that buck?" we all get a good laugh, and Im waitin for the day to bag a giant on his property, payback time!!! |

RE: The Selfish Thread to End All Selfish Threads
Of course you are right. Although, its public land. It wasnt the right thing for them to do after what you did for them, but it wasnt illegal.
Theres a pet peeves that my grandfather gives permission to hunt his property, and he completely takes advantage of my grandfather, my uncleand me. My grandfather and uncle keep their mouth closed because he is related to the family; thank you god not by blood. Yeah, the guy used to let me hunt his stand, but the guys a jerk. I'll list SOME of the things he has done. 1.Tried to sell my grandfather some meat from a deer that he killed on my grandfathers property. IS HE STUPID?!? 2.He told my uncle, "I'll let you hunt my stand for $100 this season." His stand is on my uncles property. 3.The guy kills everthing... 3 points, spikes, spotties, songbirds, runs over the rabbit, shoots herons at our pond... etc... 4.I have a deer stand set up on the edge of one of our fields... I have put over 1,000 dollars and over 30 hours of work into this stand... and he comes into my stand, smokes his cigarettes and leaves the butts in it, LEAVES A BOTTLE OF PISS IN MY STAND, Shoots 8 of the deer (all of them fawns and does) that I have been managing... and he tells, "Well, its your stand and my corn, so I can hunt it." Note: he only put out one bag of corn, WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. 5. Last year, I let a buddy of mine hunt my stand. I was about 400 yards away, when I see pet peeves haulin a$$ towards the stand my friend was in. So of course, I knew there was gonna be trouble. Pet peeves drives up to the stand, takes out his rifle, and points the gun at my pal. There is no excuse for pointing a gun at someone... his excuse was, "Well, it was unloaded, I just wanted to look at his face." My grandfather and uncle would beat me senseless if I ever thought about pointing a gun at someone... 6. My grandpa didnt want us to harvest does last year, and pet peeves deliberatly disobeyed my grandpas wishes and did it anyway right in front of my grandfathers face. And yet, my family has yet to do anything about him... Want to hear anymore?:D My point is, people like that just anger me to no end... this year, im steppin up to the plate and not tolerating any crap. And if I were you, I wouldnt either. They will continue to take advantage of you if you dont. |

I don't care if the spot you show someone is public land or over the river thru the woods to the super secret log next to the odd looking rock on farmer bob's place....if you set someone up and imply(or flat out tell them)that you are taking them to your "secret" spot then they should have the common courtesy to not go back without you....unless you tell them its cool if they go back anytime.

WEll, no good deed goes unpunished as they say. You take someone in to a private honey hole in public ground you got to figure it's now community property or will be shortly. Is it honorable. NOPE. Is the outcome shocking or unexpected. NOPE I suspect a large percentage of people would do exactly as the young man did. Go where his expert had told him was a great spot. Brings to mind the old WWII saying, "Loose lips sink ships".[8D]

RE: The Selfish Thread to End All Selfish Threads
Heck, my own brother did me in. I always used to come up to NY to bow hunt 3 or 4 days before muzzleloader season came in and then stay and bow hunt a couple more days while he muzzleloadered it. It was I wasted a couple days getting a couple stands up and getting the lay of the land. So this one particular year I came up about 3 weeks early. I walked the woods and found a couple great spots for hang ons and another couple for my climber. So I hung the stands, hid them well. I showed my brother where they were. Way back in off the beaten trail away from roads and fields where he seems to spend most of his time. I told him now he won't have to worry about me having a place to hunt and I have a couple good stands in place so I don't have to stink the place up when I come up. Muzzleloader opened on a Saturday, I arrived the next Wednesday this time so I could bow hunt 3 days and then hunt the opener of the regular firearms season with him. I arrived about 1PM and went straight to the woods. I get there and here comes my brother and a friend of his out of the woods where I was going. I ask how they had done with the muzzleloader. Well they'd shot 3 that week so far. They just now were coming out after spending a couple hours looking for a big racked buck that his friend Tim had wounded that AM. I said, where was he hunting. He said, oh in that new stand of yours. I killed a 5 point there yesterday. Mike killed a 6 point out of your other stand. Man I was some kind of PO'd. I yanked my stands out of the woods that afternoon and hunted the next couple days with my climber. I've never hung another stand in the woods. I had taken the effort to drive 400 miles one way and a few days to hang the things and my own brother, who probably has 20 stands up, felt the need for "HIS Friends" to use my stands. Man I was ticked and told him so vehemently.

RE: The Selfish Thread to End All Selfish Threads
I don't mean to sound harsh, but you have nobody to blame but yourself. Yes, they should have had the common courtesy to stay out of a spot they know you hunt. Yes, the father knew it was wrong given his reaction to the situation. On the other hand, common sense says that if you have a spot (especially on public land) that you want to keep to yourself you need to keep it to yourself.
To paraphrase what Joe Brooks says in his book, when you find a good spot for deer hunting pretend it doesn't exist unless you are setting up stands or hunting it. Otherwise, other hunters will notice the activity and try to get permission, or worse tresspass on the property. This may seem selfish, but we all work hard to get the spots we have. It would mean nothing to someone else to lease it out from under you or move in and push you out. I see it more as self-preservation. This may be a product of the competitive environment I am in with so many hunters in my area, but it is the way you have to be unfortunately. |

So do you and the brother still talk?
Makes you wonder how people have the gall. Just amazes me what some guys will do . |
