I get what you are saying now, and has nothing to do with the original question.

You were originally talking about the number of tagsone has=how much experience one can gain in a year.

Granted, Dan.....

But it stands to reason that 2 men.....equal in everything else....(time avail.; scouting; prep work; etc...).....and one has multiple tags.....he has an "opportunity" to gain more "experience" by not being relegated to few tags. That was the intended path of this entire conversation. The latter has the opportunity to gain more experience.

I dunno - hunting really isn't rocket science - to me at least. Now, there's a higher level of expertise required if you wanna master the art of hunting pressured mature deer... But for the average Joe, just filling tags with the first thing that comes alongisenough to make them happy- and I think that's actually prettyeasy. You don't need 20 years of experience.

Most people just aren't willing to do the work, which is why success rates are so low.

I mean, if you just wander onto the gamelands somewhere, find a deer trail and climb a tree right beside it... Then log 40-80-120 hours over it - you're BOUND to see something. It might not be a monster buck, but you'll surely see a deer. Then, it's as simple as point and click. I don't care if you're not watching your scent at all, wearing blue jeans, smoking non-stop, half-blind, deaf... You'll see a deer.

Hunting is a time commitment that most guys aren't willing to make. They talk the talk, but when it comes time to walk the walk, they burn out. They would rather be golfing or watching NASCAR or football, or eating at Applebee's. They sleep in. They just don't have the dedication to it. That's no indictment of them on a personal level, just stating that there are other things that they'd rather be doing...

I mean, really - there are guys who have been hunting for 40, 50 years, and still couldn't kill a deer at a zoo. There are guys out there who log more stand-hours in one season than some fellas log in 20 years. That's the difference - time.

And if you put in enough time, you'll start to figure out how to manage that time in the most effective way. Translation: You'll know that you don't want to hunt stand X with an easterly wind, or that you should save stand Y for the rut.

I don't even really know what I'm ranting about at this point, or even if I'm making a lick of sense, so I'll just stop.

To answer the original question.


If I only have one tag and tag out early I and spend no more time in the woods then I will have gained little hunting experience but a freezer full of meat.

However if I either hold on to that tag and wait for a nice buck or continue to hunt because I have unlimited tags then yes I will have gained more experience. BECAUSE I HAVE SPENT MORE TIME IN THE WOODS.

One thing my limited "experience" has taguht me.....is when to NOT log more hours afield.

I just have to learn to be committed to putting that "experience" to good use = discipline.

We could argue about everything all day.....but I gotta get some work done around here.......[&o]

This may get us off subject, but when is it that we shouldn't log hours in the field?

Does that mean I am a "non-disciplined" hunter because I hunt almost everyday of the season?

I just have limited areas to hunt. I risk overhunting MY woods by going in there, too much (especially my honey hole). If a person has the places to hunt.....log them hours/days/weeks/months!

This probably the dumbest thread I have ever read on this forumn. It is so useless I don't evenknow whyI am responding. It comes down toeach indiviual. I know people who have shot more deer than me and have hunted longer than me. Yet, I know for the most part I am a better and more experience hunter than some of those people. I scout alot, I hunt alot, and I even think about it at least once every hour of my life. I ammore experienced and better hunter today, because of the time I have spent scouting, thinking, and hunting and not because of how many deer I have shot. Shooting a deer isbasically the same everytime, there is only a few different outcomes. A person should have figured this out by now. To think that shooting more deergains a person more experience as compared to the other aspects of hunting..is really kind of pathetic. I can shoot up to three bucks a year and basically as many does as I want to. If thought I gained more experience by shooting more deer, I why buy alot more tags.
