RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...
How about a person that spends, say, about 6 months a year in the woods, different woods, not always the same patch and not hunting. He watches wildlife, watches their behaviors, learns what they do, what time of day, what time of year they do it, why they do what they do. He does this for years, still not hunting, and then one day he decides to start hunting. Would this person be an experienced or inexperienced woodsman/hunter? I believe huntign experience is gained by hunting, not necessarily killing. Certainly, to be a complete hunter you need experience killing but IMO the killing experience is a very small part of the total hunting experience package.

WOW....
So.....according to you, you are gaining more experience by hunting your patch of woods and killing twice as many deer as me. Doubtful. I did not become any better hunter because I shot more deer. About 5 years ago I did not shoot a buck. I learned more that season than any past 3. My buddy will hunt Hard in the UP of MI and see less than 20 deer a year. He still manages to find a deer and kill it. Maybe he does do it first two weeks of the season, because he is that good;) My other buddy hunts Jackson MI and if he see 20 deer a night it is bad night;) He has shot 20 deer last 2 years, and he is no better hunter than he was 2 years ago. But lets say everyone started there first day in the woods with the same amount of knowlege. I would assume that the hunter who spent the most time in the woods would gain the most exp. To me, a successful hunter is someone who understands his quarry and his quarry's environment, formulates a plan to put himself/herself in a position to take the quarry, and then has the composure and skill to follow through. The multiple tag folks mayget to makemore actual shots at animals, and probably rack up more kills, but to me, it doesn't make them better hunters. |

Sorry if you took it that way Jeff, but I'm not. You gave a poor comparison by comparing hunting and football. I asked you to clarify what you were talking about and you didn't. So....I gave you a realworld scenario with two hunters and comparing them. It's not me vs you, its me compared to you. I guess I could have clarified that earlier, but then we wouldn't be having this much fun. :D |
RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...
Here's another scenario......
Hunter "A" sees 10 deer from stand all year. He observes intently....and passes on 8 of them. Hunter "B" sees the same 10 deer.....but chooses to take all 10 of them. Who has gained more hunting "experience" when the season ends? For this scenario.....let's assume that the deer density is equal....not in jeopardy.....and they hunt the same woods. Fair? |
RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...
Dan....mucho respect....and this is "fun".

RE: One deer states.....2 deer states.....ramblings...
LOL well, if hunter B called his brother to come and track the deer for him and hunter A tracked his own deer then I would say hunter A gained more experience :D;)
