Is 50-60 suffecient?
 

I'm new here on the archery forum. Here is my question. I just bought the Diamond Black Ice with the 50-60lb limbs. Right now I'm shooting it at 58 pounds. Thats a real comfortable setting. I know that in a month or so I will be able to shoot it at the max setting which is 60. I have a 26inch draw. I can pull back 70 pounds but it kills me. Is this bow set at 60lb going to be enough power to kill elk up to 40 yards which is my limit I have set? Or should have I bought the 60-70lb limbs and work my way up there even though I would struggle for the first little while? I'm 40 years old so I'm not getting younger. I feel very comfortableand relaxed shooting this set-up but I wonder if it has enough juice to get the job done on those big elk. Any and all advice good or bad is welcome. Thanks.

I just changed the limbs on my Diamond Victory from 60-70 to 50-60. I have the limbs bottomed out and the max draw weight is 63#. I had the bow at 65# with the old limbs. I lost 2 fps. This bow and yours at 58#s will be capable of killing any game animal on the continent.

Just like tx said, it is more than enough. I recently purchased a guardian that is 60-70 and I have it set on 71#. I think I am going to trade my limbs for some 50-60's. (when my proshop guy comes back from vacation)I don't havea problem getting 70# back, but I noticed my groups have suffered and I can't shoot as long. Shooting is suppose to be fun not a workout.

My advice is to shoot 58 if that is what is comfortable for you. Out of that bow, or any bow for that matter, that is plenty of weight. Now, having said that, in Colorado they have a 60 pound minimum draw weight for elk (at least they used to someone can correct me if I am wrong here). Check the state regs before the season just to make sure for yourself. Either way, 58 is awfully close to 60. Good luck and good hunting.

Yes, 58 pounds is more than sufficient for elk. Use a heavy arrow and a solid fixed blade broadhead knows for duraility, strength, and sharpnessto maximize penetration.

Welcome to another short draw archer. I am only a 27" draw length and that creates a concern for me regarding enough kinetic energy for large animals such as elk. I would suggest you chronograph your current setup and weigh your arrows. Then, velocity X velocity X weight of arrow in grains divided by 450,240 will give you your foot pounds of kinetic energy. Most recommendations are for 40 foot pounds for deer and 50 foot pounds for large animals like elk. I personally like 50 for deer and 60 or more for elk. In any case, shot placement is the key. If you feel a little undergunned, you make yourself take only the perfect shot. Good Hunting.

As stated above 58 lbs is more than enough. If it is comfortable and your drilling bulls eyes I would not change a thing.

Did they change that recently? I swear 8-10 years ago an officer from the DOW came into our camp and asked us what poundage our bows were because they had to be at least 60 pounds. Either I was on crack, or she was.

35 does seem awfully light for elk. Heck, we need 40 just for deer in Ohio. Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure when the 35 pound minimum was officially put into effect butI do know it has been that way for at least 6 years now.

elephant would be hard with 58# but if u get its eye then it kept going till brain u might live.
