RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
I also hunt hogs my bow is a older McPherson Eliminator I have it sey on 55lb draw the speed through the crono is 258
I use exactly the same arrows as you with 3 blade muzzy's. I have had no problem downing a hog. as to tactics well I put out corn in an area I know they are for a couple of days before I hunt then more corn on the day of the hunt I also set up my tree stand as an angry hog is no fun to deal with ( that from personal experience) I have the scare to prove it too lol |
RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
There hide can be somewhat tricky, almost like armor, I wouldn't suggest using a mechanical, but your set up is fine. I don't know if I would want to meet one of them face to face, I think I would rather a bear, LOL. Good luck.

make sure you wash your hands with soap and water after dressing your kill. There is a disease you can get.

RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
While I have never shot a hog, I have spoken with people who have, and have read quite a bit on them. I think your setup should be fine, just stay away from that front shoulder! It is like armour! Can't help much with the tactics though. Good luck on your hunt.

RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
What has been said about the gristle that forms behind the shoulder on Mature Boars is right on. If you want good penetration, avoid hitting them there. The best shot that I've found is low in behind the gristle when the hog is quartering away. Unless you're going to have help carrying one of them big bubba's out you may want to stick to hogs under 250#. They are usually better eating too. I assume you will be ground hunting them (only way I hunt), listen to the experienced hoggers and hunt them like you'd hunt a deer. Their eyesight isn't the best, but they pick up movement fast and move the same way, usually in the opposite direction and usually into the thickest and nastiest stuff they can find. HAVE FUN!!!!:)
As far as your equipment, it should do just fine, except that I would recommend a heavier arrow. I shoot a longbow and prefer a heavier arrow with 2 blade fixed broadhead for the momentum, which helps to push the arrow through for optimum penetration. I would think that even at the speed you are shooting and the KE you are producing that a heavier arrow would still help with penetration. Edited by - wahya on 01/17/2002 07:42:27 |

Killed a lot of hogs with a bow, best advice..You can't shoot a hog to low, stay away from the front shoulder, and mechanicals really piss them off.

NChunter; I've heard that hogs will come to a deer grunt tube. I've also heard that they will come in to a predator call but havn't tried either one. Boars are real territorial and they are also opportunistic feeders as well as being omnivores so you can put a bet on it that I'll be trying some calls. Can't bait them here though.
Bowhunter4life, you got lots of hog killin energy going for you. Have fun. Let us know how the the hunt goes and get some pics, lol. You are right, 150# and less is best for a good meat pig. My last one was just over 100# and was a good roasting hog. |

Good one Masterbuck! The nocturnal ones are the easier to catch, just don't try t stick them with an arrow, they don't like that.

RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
Took a bunch of hogs this year at our lodge some rifle some bow.I shoot the exact arrow weight and brodhead combination you do and had no problems. My speed is right at 282 and two of the three hogs I arrowed this year were pass throughs .The thrid hit the offside leg , broke it, but didnt exit. Range was 20 yards or less and the hog sizes were from 2-400 lbs.
Watch out for those noses! We have had our best luck by baiting with shell corn 7-10 days prior to hunting. Keep the pile going and wear clean rubber boots when you put it out. These things spook at any foriegn smell.Like everyone else has said they dont see very well but that nose and those ears are tops! You'll find out that once you shoot a hog in a pile it will be awhile before that particular group will return to that set up. One thing I can say with absolute certainty is hogs learn quick and are super smart animals. I like to aim for the crease right behind the shoulder in the mid third of the chest. Puts em down quick and also puts you behind the gristle. Given a choice I'll shoot a 200 lb sow any day over any sized boar.Hey, a side arm isnt a bad bet either when bowhunting hogs!! They can and will enact revenge on you given the chance. |

Maybe I should try a fat shaft. My little ACC just makes 'em mad. The most important bloodtrail leads right to the foot of the cross |
RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
Like 5shot says stay away from the shoulder shot and you will be OK. I have shot one with a rifle but not a bow. I used to go to Soperton, Ga. and hunt them.
|
RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
Your equipment sounds good, The advice about the shoulder area is true. I have seen a 300lb boar hit twice in this area and never knew it. The thing walked around for what seemed to be hours before showing a quartering away shot that put it down.
Sour several jugs of corn, Take a post hole digger and dig down about 4 feet or more.(do this in a area that you or the owner wont mind a large hole and in a area that the hogs are coming through) Fill the hole with the sour corn and then cover it with dirt. The hogs will not stop till they have gotten every last piece of corn. Good Hunting and watch those tusk. Rick |
RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
put some corn in a bucket with water and let it sour about a week pryer to hunting and then put it out. If you have time before the hunt put up a feeder they will quickly identify with the sound of it when it goes of. we used to have some that would come to the feeders if it was spun by hand, they learned the sound means food

RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
Best scent/ bait I have used for them is strawberry jello. Mix a 5 gallon bucket full and pour it in an area where there are plenty of leaves, they'll tear it up.

RE: Any hog hunters in here:I need advise
Your setup is fine. You do not need heavier arrows. They would not increase your ke but would make range estimation more critical. Keep the setup that you got for best results.
Hogs have what is know as a "pad" on each side. It is pretty much a thick, hard, tough shield made of dense fat or something like that. The pigs use it as protection while fighting. The Pad can stop bullets and occasionally arrows. I wouldn't worry about it stopping the arrow from penetrating the vitals because such is rare. The bigger the pig, the thicker the pad. Pigs have an excellent scence of smell. Probably better than that of deer. Their sight is not great but is still good. My biggest advise is to use scentproof clothing. If your totally scent free your odds of getting a pig are greatly increased. Use the wind in your favor and hunt early and late in the day. I don't know about over there but pigs here are mainly nocturnal except on rainy days. Hope you get a big one. Oh and baiting works very good if legal. Nic |
