RE: Bad Genetics????
Ive seen alot of people take out young deer like that because the rack was crap. I personaly dont think you should even consider culling a buck until he hits a minimum of 3.5 years old. Ive had 2.5 year old 8 pointers that would easily make pope and young with bodies that might field dress 150lbs. Ive also had 3.5 to 4.5 year old 8 pointers that might score 120inches but would easily field dress 200+ pounds. The point is a yound buck with a big rack is a no brainer, he is gonna get big. A young buck with a small rack might turn out to be a good deer he just needs to get old enough. Some deer seem to put more energy into growing their bodies the first 3 years than others, it doesnt mean he wont be P&Y when he hits maturity.

RE: Bad Genetics????
I shot a 2 1/2 year old 8 point last year that wieghed in 155 field dressed, it was the first deer I ever shot but it probably would have ended up a monster.

RE: Bad Genetics????
ORIGINAL: GMMAT I think its a big mistake to discuss culling any deer that are less than 3.5 years old. |

RE: Bad Genetics????
There is no doubt in my mind that this 1.5yr old would have been a STUD! But, He didn't survive last year I don't think. We'll soon see, my game cam pictures will start flowing in very soon. As soon as the acorns start dropping, I'll be in buisness. I seem to be hunting a Oak hot spot, but with the late freeze and drought we had this year, the acorn crop could be dismal.
