Tree stand
I was just curious about what hieght everyone hunts from i thier stand. I like to hunt from about 15 to 20feet up in the tree. Depending on weather conditions and amount of brush in the area i hunt.

RE: Tree stand
I say 12-20 feet depending on the tree, cover and type of stand.

RE: Tree stand
Some people (for some reason) equate treestand height to hunting prowess.
Just get as high as it takes to take advantage of thermals.......get sufficient cover......and stay safe. Good luck. |
RE: Tree stand
I like about 12ft to 20 ft although sometimes a little higher or lower is what you need.I have seen 30ft but I got a nose bleed and the tree was blowing in the breeze like a mast on a sailboat.
At most of the places I sit if I go much higher than 15ft I am really cutting down on my shooting lanes. I guess it just depends on where you hunt. Just remember that at 3ft or 30ftyah gotta strap yourself in!!!! |
RE: Tree stand
I shoot for 20 feet, give or take depending on cover, shooting lanes, etc.

RE: Tree stand
It depends on the cover, natural shooting lanes and the terain.Normally 20 ft give or take.In the early season it can be tough to get that high with all of the leaves.

RE: Tree stand
about 20 ft, dont see any reason to go higher
|
RE: Tree stand
For me it depends on where the best cover is. If it is 12 feet then that is where I go. If it is 20 then I go there. Heck if I think I have a better chance on the ground then that is where I am going.

RE: Tree stand
Twenty four to thirty two for me , I hunt alot of rolling hill land.

RE: Tree stand
It all depends on the terrain and cover. I like hunting around 20 ft. , altho I hunted one stand last year at 10 ft.. due to the cover of the trees

RE: Tree stand
Another one of those totally "dependant" questions....
It all depends on where I hunt and what I'm hunting for. The three big bear stands that we build in the trees were 20'-25' because we wanted to be up above them so small movements in the stand didn't give us away. I will usually go about the same when I hunt from my climber. Again I want to be out of their line of sight. Too high and you don't have a good double lung shot. I might not go so far up if the tree has a lot of low branches. I like to use the surrounding branches for cover as well. I have roped them and pulled them close for additional natural cover. It also depends on the terrain around me. I hunt in the mountains so I might have to go higher to get a good angle for a shot. I don't like to go too high because the tree gets smaller and the stand starts to lean forward. I didn't set my stand up correct one time and it leaned forward. I had to literally hold on so as to not to fall off. On that note....always get down to ground level to change the straps on your stand. I was about three or four feet off when I realized I didn't have the base angled up enough. I redid the top and tried to pick the bottom up with my feet and disconnect the strap...which I did...and then the stand slipped off my feet....whoosh to the ground. It is also a good idea to have staps between the two sections..to prevent this. Reid |
RE: Tree stand
I try to get at least 20, but it depends on cover. I've hunted in trees that are like telephone poles, although not my first choice sometimes the only choice and I've noticed if you get up 25 ft and move only at the right times the deer don't see you.
